Personality
Personality
Wakita is energetic, inquisitive and fond of inserting himself into mysteries. He describes himself as a true Tokyoite and speaks with the confidence of someone accustomed to dealing directly with customers.
His enthusiasm for deduction is genuine. He quickly notices inconsistencies in cases and actively competes with Kogoro Mouri, only to become impressed enough by Kogoro's apparent solution to request an apprenticeship.
Wakita is also unusually interested in information surrounding Shinichi Kudo. This curiosity is not merely that of an amateur mystery enthusiast and reflects the hidden purpose behind the Wakita identity.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Wakita demonstrates strong observational and deductive ability. He can follow complicated cases, identify suspicious details and propose explanations independently rather than relying entirely on Kogoro.
He is an experienced sushi chef and claims to have worked as a wandering chef rather than remaining at one establishment. His apparent eye problem initially keeps him away from knife preparation, so he serves customers instead.
Wakita's left-eye problem is part of a disguise: the eye is actually artificial. His true abilities extend far beyond those of an ordinary sushi chef, including intelligence gathering, disguise-related deception and the authority to command senior Black Organization operatives.
Story Role
Story Role
Wakita enters the story as a replacement worker at Beika Iroha Sushi and soon becomes involved in a murder case with Kogoro Mouri and Conan Edogawa. His deductive interest leads him to challenge Kogoro and later become his second apprentice after Toru Amuro.
His proximity to the Mouri Detective Agency allows him to remain involved in cases and gather information about the people around Kogoro. His questions concerning Shinichi Kudo gradually become particularly significant.
Kanenori Wakita is eventually revealed to be Rum, the Black Organization's second-in-command. The sushi-chef persona is a disguise that places Rum immediately beside the Mouri Detective Agency while he investigates matters of interest to the organization.
Rum takes a particular interest in Shinichi Kudo and orders Bourbon to gather information about him. His history also reaches back to the seventeen-year-old case involving Kohji Haneda and Amanda Hughes, making his apparently mundane presence in Beika part of a much older Black Organization mystery.
Relationships
Relationships
Kogoro Mouri becomes Wakita's mentor after the sushi chef is impressed by his apparent deductions. The apprenticeship also provides Wakita with a convenient reason to remain close to the detective and gather information.
Conan Edogawa encounters Wakita through cases connected to Beika Iroha Sushi and the Mouri Detective Agency. [Because Wakita is actually Rum, his proximity places Conan Edogawa unusually close to one of the Black Organization's highest-ranking members.](#spoiler)
Toru Amuro is Kogoro's first apprentice, making Wakita his nominal fellow pupil. [As Bourbon, Toru Amuro is also a Black Organization operative who receives direct instructions from Rum.](#spoiler)
Shinichi Kudo attracts Wakita's attention despite his supposed disappearance. [Rum orders an investigation into Shinichi Kudo, making Wakita's questions about him part of a Black Organization inquiry rather than casual curiosity.](#spoiler)
Gin and other Black Organization members recognize Rum as a senior authority. Wakita's true position places him directly beneath the organization's boss in its hierarchy.
