Jiji knew Momo when they were children and became her first crush. During that period, however, he participated in teasing her over the spiritual rituals Seiko had taught her. The ridicule contributed to Momo's childhood embarrassment about her grandmother's practices, and the two eventually stopped being close. Their shared history makes Jiji's later return immediately significant to Momo even before the supernatural problem surrounding him becomes clear.

Years later, Jiji's family moves into a house in a rural hot-springs area. Strange phenomena begin occurring around the property, and Jiji becomes aware of a frightening entity that repeatedly appears before him. The supernatural pressure surrounding the house also affects his parents badly enough that the family situation can no longer be treated as an ordinary haunting. With conventional solutions failing, Jiji turns to Seiko because of her reputation as a spirit medium. The official anime profile introduces him specifically as Momo's childhood friend who comes to Seiko after encountering a spirit in the house his family has moved into.

He temporarily stays with Momo and Seiko and transfers to Kami High School. His arrival immediately unsettles Okarun, who learns that Jiji is not merely an old friend but Momo's former crush. Jiji's tall, athletic appearance and easy familiarity with her intensify Okarun's insecurity, although Jiji himself quickly treats Okarun with warmth rather than hostility.

Momo and Okarun eventually accompany Jiji back to his family's house to investigate. The apparent haunting proves to be connected to a much larger supernatural system involving the Kito family, the enormous creature worshipped beneath the area, and the spirit known as the Evil Eye. The investigation becomes the central conflict of the Cursed House storyline and establishes Jiji as a permanent member of the paranormal group rather than simply a link to Momo's past.

Jiji's unusually strong spiritual constitution becomes especially important during that crisis. His compassion toward the suffering spirit he encounters prevents him from treating the Evil Eye as merely an enemy, even when doing so places himself and his friends in danger. That decision creates a relationship between Jiji and the yokai that continues long after the immediate mystery of the house is resolved.

Jiji is energetic, outgoing and intentionally ridiculous in ordinary conversation. He makes exaggerated faces, adopts strange poses, throws out jokes with little warning and frequently behaves as though embarrassing himself is preferable to allowing a conversation to become uncomfortable. That behavior initially gives Okarun the impression that Jiji is shallow. The assumption quickly proves incomplete. Jiji is exceptionally friendly and tends to notice positive qualities in other people rather than treating them as competition. Instead of exploiting Okarun's insecurity over Momo, he makes genuine efforts to include him and becomes enthusiastic about their friendship.

His most important personality trait is compassion. Jiji has difficulty ignoring suffering even when the person or spirit responsible poses a danger to him. His response to the Evil Eye originates from recognizing the misery behind its violence. This empathy is admirable but can also be dangerously indiscriminate; supernatural beings in Dandadan do not automatically become harmless because someone understands their pain.

Jiji also carries considerable guilt. He wears the Kami High School boys' uniform after transferring to Momo and Okarun's school. His relaxed posture and frequent exaggerated facial expressions prevent the uniform from making him appear particularly formal, and he often carries himself more like an athlete than the comparatively reserved Okarun.

Jiji's appearance changes dramatically when the Evil Eye controls his body. The transformation alters his hair and facial features and produces the characteristic markings associated with the yokai. He also wears the Evil Eye's distinctive briefs, an object directly tied to the spirit and the hatred embedded in its existence. VIZ's description of Volume 7 identifies the Evil Eye's possession of Jiji as an ongoing condition following the Cursed House battle.

The transformed body's posture differs sharply from Jiji's ordinary mannerisms. Jiji is loose, expressive and constantly gesturing, while the Evil Eye moves with aggression and predatory confidence. The contrast allows the same body to read immediately as two different personalities even before either speaks.

Later combat training also makes Jiji's already athletic body more important. Unlike characters whose fighting ability depends entirely on a visible transformation, Jiji develops techniques that allow his own spiritual energy to be weaponized while he remains himself.

Jiji possesses an exceptional amount of spiritual energy. His potential is apparent to experienced supernatural practitioners, and his body is unusually capable of containing forces that would be dangerous to an ordinary human. This spiritual constitution becomes the foundation for both his survival of the Evil Eye's influence and his eventual development as a fighter.

His physical abilities are already above average before formal supernatural training. Jiji is athletic, coordinated and capable of keeping up with demanding physical activity. These qualities do not initially make him comparable with transformed Okarun or Aira, but they provide a strong physical base once he begins learning to control spiritual power.

The largest source of danger and power connected to Jiji is the Evil Eye. During the Cursed House conflict, the spirit possesses him, creating an alternate state with vastly enhanced combat ability. VIZ's official summaries for Volumes 6 and 7 describe the Evil Eye possessing Jiji and attacking Okarun and Momo, with cold water later causing the Evil Eye to regain control.

The possession follows temperature-based rules after Seiko's efforts to stabilize the situation. Cold water causes the Evil Eye personality to emerge, while hot water can restore Jiji's control. This creates a deliberately precarious arrangement: Jiji can live among his friends, but a mundane splash of cold liquid can become a supernatural emergency.

Jiji later begins learning to manipulate ki, his own life energy, under Seiko's guidance. His natural reserves are extraordinarily large, but initially he has poor control over them. Learning to concentrate that energy allows him to produce ranged attacks rather than relying solely on the physical abilities available through possession.

Jiji eventually learns to project his ki as a destructive palm-generated wave. By applying the Power of Words and naming the attack, he strengthens the output into a technique he calls the Evil Gun.

Later training further improves his control over spiritual energy and his ability to cooperate with the Evil Eye rather than treating possession only as a condition to suppress. He eventually develops applications that combine his own ki with the Evil Eye's power and principles of spiral motion.

Ki Manipulation allows Jiji to consciously gather and release his unusually large reserves of spiritual energy. His early attempts are inefficient because the quantity of power available to him exceeds his ability to shape it properly, making control more important than simply increasing output.

Ha Wave is a palm-based discharge of concentrated ki. Jiji gathers spiritual energy and releases it forward as a ranged blast. The technique provides him with an independent offensive ability rather than requiring the Evil Eye to take control of his body.

Evil Gun is the strengthened form of Jiji's ki blast. By invoking the Power of Words and declaring the attack's name, he increases its force before firing the energy from his hands. The technique becomes one of his principal offensive moves in later manga battles.

Spiral-enhanced Evil Gun combines Jiji's ki control with spiral principles and power connected to the Evil Eye. The resulting blast is substantially larger and more powerful than his earlier output, reflecting his increased understanding of how different forms of supernatural energy can interact.

The Evil Eye Transformation is not a conventional Jiji technique because control passes to another consciousness. It nevertheless gives his body access to the yokai's exceptional strength, speed, durability and supernatural attacks. The distinction between Jiji using power and the Evil Eye using Jiji's body remains important throughout their relationship.

Momo Ayase is Jiji's childhood friend and first crush. As children, he mocked the rituals Momo performed at Seiko Ayase's instruction, contributing to her embarrassment over her family's spiritual practices. When they meet again, Jiji recognizes that his behavior was hurtful and apologizes. Their old familiarity returns quickly, and he continues to care deeply about her. Momo's earlier crush on him has largely changed by the time they reconnect, while Jiji's affection for her remains more complicated.

Ken Takakura, or Okarun, initially sees Jiji as a romantic rival because of his history with Momo. Jiji's height, appearance, athleticism and easy rapport with her seem to embody many of Okarun's insecurities. Jiji, however, rapidly becomes fond of Okarun and treats him as a genuine friend. Their relationship develops through the Cursed House crisis and becomes particularly important when Okarun assumes responsibility for confronting the Evil Eye. VIZ's Volume 6 summary specifically places Okarun against the spirit possessing Jiji.

Evil Eye has the most complicated relationship with Jiji. Jiji encounters the spirit through the curse surrounding his family's home and recognizes the suffering behind its hatred of humanity. His sympathy allows the Evil Eye into his body, creating a possession that initially threatens everyone around him. Rather than simply destroying the spirit, Jiji and his friends eventually pursue ways for both consciousnesses to coexist.

Seiko Ayase is both Jiji's childhood connection to Momo's family and his most important spiritual teacher. He comes to her specifically because he needs help with the haunting of his new home. After the Evil Eye possession, Seiko studies his condition, establishes practical rules for managing it and later teaches Jiji how to control his enormous reserves of ki.

Aira Shiratori becomes one of Jiji's regular teammates once the supernatural group expands. Both possess transformed states connected with yokai, although the relationships involved are very different: Aira directly controls Acrobatic Silky's inherited power, whereas Jiji initially shares his body with an independent personality. They fight together repeatedly and become part of the group's front line.

Turbo Granny is wary of the Evil Eye and understands the danger surrounding Jiji's condition better than the teenagers initially do. Her knowledge of yokai makes her a useful source of information, although Jiji's instinct to sympathize with supernatural beings can conflict with her more cynical judgment.

Manjiro assists Momo, Okarun and Jiji during the investigation surrounding the cursed house and the enormous serpent worshipped in the region. His spiritual knowledge and connection to a local shrine make him one of the adults involved in containing the disaster connected with Jiji's family property.

Naki Kito belongs to the family controlling the area around Jiji's new home. Her family's actions place Jiji and his friends directly in danger and connect the haunting to a much older system of sacrifice and local superstition. The Kitos therefore represent a human threat intertwined with the supernatural forces affecting Jiji.

Kinta Sakata later joins the wider group around Momo and Okarun. His personality is nearly as performative as Jiji's, though the two express themselves differently: Jiji is naturally sociable, while Kinta frequently tries to construct an impressive image of himself. They nevertheless become allies once larger extraterrestrial conflicts require the entire group to cooperate.

VIZ's Volume 6 synopsis directly identifies the spirit's possession of the "softhearted Jiji" as the turning point of the conflict.

The next stage of the story centers on coexistence rather than a straightforward exorcism. Seiko cannot simply remove the Evil Eye, and cold water triggers the spirit's control over Jiji's body. The group therefore watches over him while Okarun takes on the unusual task of dealing directly with the spirit's desire to fight.

Season 2 makes Jiji one of the anime's central characters. The Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye theatrical event and the second television season both foreground his family's haunting, possession and the group's efforts to manage the Evil Eye. Kaito Ishikawa returned as Jiji in Japanese and Aleks Le in English for the adaptation.

Later manga arcs develop Jiji from the person who needs to be protected from his own possession into an independent supernatural fighter. His enormous ki reserves allow him to participate directly in battles against extraterrestrial and yokai threats, while his relationship with the Evil Eye gradually becomes more cooperative.

Jiji initially appears through other people's perceptions. To Okarun, he is the tall, handsome childhood friend who seems like an obvious romantic threat. To Momo, he is someone associated with both an old crush and the painful childhood period when she was mocked for Seiko's rituals. His exaggerated behavior can initially make those impressions seem more important than his actual personality.

His apology to Momo provides an early correction. Jiji remembers what he did when they were younger and acknowledges that it hurt her. The scene establishes that the person returning to her life is not simply the same boy she once liked; he has enough maturity to recognize past cruelty and enough sincerity to apologize without demanding that she dismiss it.

The Cursed House material then reveals the trait that most strongly defines him: empathy. Jiji responds to the Evil Eye's suffering even after learning how dangerous the spirit is. That compassion causes serious consequences, but the story never treats caring itself as the mistake. His development instead concerns learning that empathy must be accompanied by the strength and judgment necessary to protect other people from the consequences.

Jiji's supernatural growth parallels that emotional development. Initially, the strongest force associated with him belongs to the Evil Eye rather than Jiji himself. Training with Seiko gives him an ability that comes from his own spiritual reserves, allowing him to contribute without surrendering control of his body.

His later mastery of the Evil Gun and improved cooperation with the Evil Eye push that development further. Instead of defining Jiji and the spirit as host and invader, later battles show them learning methods of using the same body toward shared objectives.

Jin Enjouji's name is written 円城寺 仁 in Japanese. His given name, Jin, uses 仁, a kanji associated with benevolence, humanity and compassion. That meaning fits particularly well with his tendency to sympathize with others, including supernatural beings that most people would instinctively regard only as threats.

His surname, Enjouji, is written 円城寺. The name is an established Japanese surname, and the manga has not supplied a specific in-universe explanation for why Yukinobu Tatsu selected it. Any symbolic interpretation beyond the literal kanji would therefore be speculative.

"Jiji" is the nickname by which nearly everyone in his social circle refers to him. The series treats it as an ordinary shortened personal nickname rather than a supernatural alias, and the official anime material consistently labels him "Jiji" while identifying his full name as Jin Enjouji.

The nickname is unrelated to the Japanese word jiji sometimes used for an old man. Within Dandadan, it functions specifically as the familiar name used for Jin Enjouji.
