Background
Background
Aira attends Kami High School alongside Momo and Okarun and is already well known among the student body before becoming involved in supernatural events. Her beauty and outwardly sweet behavior make her one of the school's most popular girls. The official anime profile describes her as a "popular beautiful girl" at school whose abilities awaken after she picks up a particular object.
Her public personality initially conceals a considerably more arrogant private side. Aira enjoys being admired and assumes that many of the boys around her are attracted to her. When she first encounters Okarun, she performs a deliberately charming apology after bumping into him, then later mocks him when speaking with her friends. Momo overhears the conversation and retaliates by using her psychic power to drop a basin onto Aira.
The incident contributes to Aira's misunderstanding of Momo. By this point, Aira has found one of the golden balls lost as a consequence of Okarun's curse. Exposure to its spiritual energy restores her dormant ability to perceive supernatural beings, causing her to see phenomena that had previously been invisible. The official anime's sixth-episode synopsis directly identifies possession of the golden ball as the apparent reason she begins seeing supernatural entities.
Because Aira already considers herself unusually important, the sudden appearance of spirits leads her toward an elaborate explanation: she believes she has been chosen to oppose evil and interprets Momo's psychic powers as evidence that Momo is a demon. Her conclusions have little basis in actual occult knowledge, but she embraces them with complete confidence.
Her supernatural life changes permanently through her encounter with Acrobatic Silky. The yokai has a mysterious connection to Aira dating back to childhood, and their confrontation exposes both to memories and emotions neither fully understood at first. Aira subsequently becomes capable of drawing on Acrobatic Silky's spiritual abilities herself, turning her from an inexperienced observer of the occult into an active participant in the group's battles.
Personality
Personality
Aira is confident, theatrical and deeply conscious of her social status. She knows that she is considered attractive and initially treats that popularity as evidence that she is fundamentally exceptional. Around admirers, she can present herself as gentle and slightly innocent while privately displaying considerably more vanity and bluntness.
Her supernatural awakening magnifies that tendency. Rather than concluding that she has stumbled into something she does not understand, Aira quickly decides that gaining spiritual perception must mean she has been selected for an important destiny. She casts Momo as a demonic enemy and herself as a protector of humanity, building an elaborate worldview from incomplete information.
Despite her arrogance, Aira is not cowardly. Once genuine danger appears, she is willing to fight rather than simply maintain the image of being heroic. Her confidence can exceed her experience, but she repeatedly puts herself at risk when other people are threatened. This willingness becomes more important as she gains greater control over Acrobatic Silky's abilities.
Aira also has a competitive streak, particularly around Momo. Their clashes involve personality, leadership and especially Okarun. Aira openly pursues him after developing feelings for him, whereas Momo struggles to speak directly about her own attraction. The resulting rivalry produces frequent arguments, but it does not prevent Aira from relying on Momo during serious battles.
Over time, her self-proclaimed role as the group's natural leader becomes less purely egotistical. She continues to announce her authority whether anyone else recognizes it or not, but repeated battles turn the people around her into genuine companions rather than supporting characters in the heroic narrative she invented for herself.
Appearance
Appearance

Aira is a teenage girl with long pink hair and blue eyes. Her appearance is treated within the story itself as conventionally attractive, and her popularity at Kami High School is partly built around that reputation. The official anime character profile explicitly identifies her as one of the school's popular beauties.
Her hair falls well past her shoulders and is normally worn loose, framing her face with shorter sections near the front. Her everyday appearance is carefully maintained, fitting a student who is highly aware of how others perceive her.
At school, she wears the standard Kami High School girls' uniform. Compared with Momo's more gyaru-influenced presentation, Aira generally maintains a polished appearance that supports the sweet and refined persona she presents to other students.
Her appearance changes substantially when she accesses Acrobatic Silky's power. Her hair becomes dramatically longer and fuller, gaining the supernatural mobility associated with the yokai. A mask-like facial structure also appears, visually linking her transformed state to Acrobatic Silky rather than presenting it as an unrelated power-up.
The transformed silhouette emphasizes vertical motion, long hair and acrobatic movement. Where Okarun's Turbo Granny form communicates speed through a forward-leaning, predatory shape, Aira's transformation reflects the flowing hair and flexible aerial movement that characterized Acrobatic Silky.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Aira originally has a latent sensitivity to supernatural phenomena, but it is not active during most of her ordinary school life. Contact with one of Okarun's golden balls reawakens that perception, allowing her to see spirits and psychic manifestations that had previously been invisible to her. The anime's official profile states that her ability blossoms after she picks up "a certain thing."
Her primary combat abilities come from Acrobatic Silky. After their encounter, Aira becomes capable of using the yokai's spiritual power in a transformed state. Like Okarun's use of Turbo Granny's abilities, this gives a human combatant access to qualities originally associated with a supernatural entity.
Aira gains greatly enhanced speed and agility while transformed. Her fighting style relies on rapid aerial changes of direction, flips, sweeping movements and attacks launched from unusual angles. She is particularly effective in environments where she can exploit walls, ceilings or surrounding structures rather than remaining grounded.
Her transformed hair is both a physical and supernatural weapon. Aira can extend and manipulate it over considerable distances, using it to seize enemies, anchor herself to surfaces, redirect her movement or attack from outside ordinary striking range. The ability gives her more control over space than a purely close-range fighter would possess.
She also receives increased strength and durability. While she does not specialize in raw impact to the same extent as some of the group's other fighters, the combination of supernatural reinforcement and high-speed movement allows her to hurt large yokai and extraterrestrial opponents.
Aira improves significantly with experience. Her earliest use of Acrobatic Silky's abilities is instinctive, but repeated battles teach her how to combine hair manipulation, acceleration and acrobatics more deliberately. By the material covered through the anime's second season, she can function as one of the group's dependable front-line combatants rather than simply an inexperienced student with borrowed supernatural power.
Later manga battles show Aira taking an increasingly active leadership role during large-scale confrontations, coordinating other fighters while using Acrobatic Silky's abilities with greater precision. During the conflict with the Kur, she fights alongside the expanded group against extraterrestrial invaders and demonstrates considerably greater stamina and tactical awareness than during her earliest appearances.
Named Techniques
Named Techniques
Aira does not maintain a large catalogue of formally announced attacks. Her combat style is instead built around recurring applications of Acrobatic Silky's abilities.
Acrobatic Silky Transformation is Aira's principal supernatural combat state. Activating the inherited yokai power changes her appearance and grants enhanced speed, agility, strength and control over her hair.
Prehensile Hair allows Aira to extend and manipulate her transformed hair as if it were a collection of additional limbs. She can wrap it around opponents, seize objects, secure herself to distant structures or use it to alter her trajectory during high-speed movement.
Acrobatic Movement combines the yokai's exceptional flexibility with Aira's supernatural physical enhancement. She attacks through flips, spins, leaps and sudden directional changes rather than relying on conventional grounded fighting.
Her abilities are particularly effective when paired with other members of the group. Momo can hold or redirect an enemy with psychic force while Aira approaches from another angle, while Okarun's speed allows the two transformed fighters to apply simultaneous pressure from different directions.
Relationships
Relationships
Momo Ayase begins as Aira's principal rival. Aira wrongly interprets Momo's psychic ability as demonic power and decides that defeating her is part of her supposedly divine mission. Personal hostility is reinforced when Momo overhears Aira insulting Okarun and later by their competing feelings toward him. Repeated supernatural battles nevertheless force them to trust one another, and the rivalry gradually exists alongside a genuine friendship. Aira continues provoking Momo and competing with her, but she also protects her and relies on her without hesitation when circumstances become serious.
Ken Takakura, better known as Okarun, becomes Aira's romantic interest after the Acrobatic Silky incident. His willingness to risk himself for her affects her deeply, and she interprets his kindness in explicitly romantic terms. Unlike Momo, Aira is comparatively direct about pursuing him and frequently attempts to create physical or emotional closeness. Okarun does not reciprocate her feelings in the same way, but he comes to regard her as a trusted friend and combat partner.
Acrobatic Silky has the most important supernatural relationship with Aira. Aira encountered the yokai when she was very young, after the loss of her own mother, and mistook the strange figure before her for her mother. Acrobatic Silky subsequently develops an intense maternal attachment toward Aira. Their later confrontation becomes tragic rather than simply antagonistic, and Aira's eventual possession of Silky's power permanently connects their stories.
Seiko Ayase becomes one of Aira's principal sources of occult guidance after she joins the group. Aira does not possess Seiko's knowledge of yokai or barriers and therefore benefits from her explanations even when she continues acting as though she naturally understands more than she actually does. Seiko treats her as another capable but inexperienced teenager who needs practical instruction.
Turbo Granny regularly interacts with Aira after the group begins gathering at the Ayase household. Their personalities are naturally abrasive toward one another, and Turbo Granny has little patience for Aira's grandiose claims. Aira nevertheless recognizes her knowledge of supernatural phenomena and fights alongside the group despite their arguments.
Jin Enjoji, usually called Jiji, becomes part of Aira's wider friend group after the Cursed House incidents. His loud, unserious behavior differs from her own theatrical self-importance, but they work together effectively once supernatural battles require the group's combined abilities.
Evil Eye represents a dangerous complication attached to Jiji. Aira becomes involved in battles surrounding the yokai and must treat Jiji's body differently depending on which personality is in control. Her willingness to fight powerful supernatural opponents makes her useful when the Evil Eye becomes hostile.
Kinta Sakata joins the group after observing Okarun's growing popularity with girls including Aira. Aira does not share Kinta's inflated view of his own attractiveness and is generally unimpressed by his attempts to present himself as impressive. His usefulness with nanoskin technology nevertheless earns him a place within their increasingly strange circle.
Mr. Mantis Shrimp shifts from enemy to ally before Aira becomes deeply integrated into the supernatural group. Later encounters place them on the same side, illustrating how broad the group's network becomes as humans, aliens and spirits who once fought one another begin cooperating.
[Vamola becomes one of Aira's allies during the later extraterrestrial conflicts. Aira participates in protecting her after the circumstances surrounding her arrival on Earth become clear, and the two fight together during the invasion by the Kur.](#spoiler)
[Rin Sawaki joins the wider supernatural circle after becoming involved with a spirit connected to her childhood. Aira treats her as another member of the expanding group and participates in later battles alongside her.](#spoiler)
Story Role
Story Role
Aira first appears during the search for Okarun's missing golden balls. Her introduction initially presents her through ordinary school politics rather than supernatural combat: she is popular, admired and skilled at maintaining a carefully pleasant public persona. The manga introduces her in Chapter 10, while the anime begins integrating her into the story during Episode 5 before making her central to Episode 6.
Finding one of the golden balls draws her directly into the paranormal plot. Its energy allows her to perceive beings she could not previously see, and her lack of occult knowledge causes her to interpret that awakening through her own inflated sense of destiny. Momo therefore becomes both a personal rival and, in Aira's imagination, an enemy of humanity.
The Acrobatic Silky incident overturns that simple worldview. Aira is confronted by a supernatural being whose connection to her is rooted in grief rather than straightforward evil. The confrontation ends with Aira inheriting Acrobatic Silky's power, ensuring that she remains part of the supernatural side of the story even after the immediate conflict is resolved.
From that point onward, Aira becomes one of the series' principal secondary fighters. She joins Momo and Okarun against subsequent alien threats and gradually becomes part of the group based around the Ayase household. Her rivalry with Momo and pursuit of Okarun continue, but neither prevents her from functioning as a reliable ally.
Season 2 expands her combat role considerably. The official anime lists Aira among the continuing central cast, with Ayane Sakura returning alongside Shion Wakayama, Natsuki Hanae and Kaito Ishikawa. The season places her within the increasingly large ensemble of students and supernatural fighters rather than treating her exclusively as the focus of the Acrobatic Silky storyline.
In later manga arcs, Aira becomes increasingly confident in organizing the group during emergencies. Her earlier insistence that she is naturally their leader develops into actual attempts to coordinate people during large-scale supernatural battles, particularly when the main cast is divided across multiple threats.
Character Development
Character Development
Aira's earliest characterization is built around a flattering image of herself that she expects other people to share. She is beautiful, popular and accustomed to attention, so the discovery that she can see supernatural phenomena fits easily into her belief that she must be special. Her first response is not fear but the assumption that she has been chosen for a heroic purpose.
The Acrobatic Silky incident forces her into an experience that cannot be understood through vanity alone. Confronting the yokai exposes Aira to grief, maternal love and sacrifice in a way that directly connects with her own childhood loss. Her emotional response shows a capacity for empathy that had barely appeared during her initial school scenes.
Her attraction to Okarun similarly complicates the persona she presents to other students. Aira initially regards him as socially insignificant, but his selflessness changes her opinion dramatically. Once she develops feelings for him, she pursues him with the same confidence she applies elsewhere, only to discover that popularity does not guarantee romantic success.
Her relationship with Momo evolves more gradually. Aira continues to treat her as a rival and frequently declares that she should be in charge, but their fights become increasingly superficial compared with the trust they demonstrate in dangerous situations. Aira eventually stops needing to imagine Momo as a demon in order to justify their disagreements.
Combat also makes her more disciplined. Acrobatic Silky's power gives her tremendous mobility, but experience teaches her that individual confidence is not enough against large supernatural threats. She becomes more willing to coordinate with others and increasingly uses her abilities to support the group rather than simply demonstrate her own importance.
Later manga material makes the change especially visible when Aira assumes responsibility during group battles rather than merely announcing herself as leader. Although her ego remains intact, the leadership she once invented for herself begins to resemble an actual sense of responsibility toward her friends.
Etymology
Etymology
Aira's name is written 白鳥 愛羅 in Japanese. Her surname, Shiratori, uses the kanji 白鳥, literally meaning "white bird" and commonly used to mean "swan." The name suits the elegant public image associated with her introduction, although the manga has not supplied a specific in-universe explanation for the choice.
Her given name, Aira, is written 愛羅. The first character, 愛, means "love" or "affection," while 羅 can carry several meanings depending on context, including gauze, netting or an arrangement of things. No official statement assigns a definitive symbolic interpretation to the full name.
The bird imagery suggested by "Shiratori" also happens to fit her transformed combat style, which relies heavily on sweeping aerial motion and graceful acrobatics. This is a linguistic observation rather than a confirmed explanation from Yukinobu Tatsu.
Unlike Okarun, Aira does not regularly use a supernatural codename. Her transformed identity remains associated directly with the abilities inherited from Acrobatic Silky.

In Other Media
In Other Media
Aira is a major supporting character in the television anime adaptation of Dandadan, produced by Science SARU. Ayane Sakura voices her in Japanese. The official character page describes Aira as one of the school's popular girls who awakens supernatural abilities after finding a mysterious object and subsequently mistakes Momo for a demon.
Lisa Reimold performs Aira in the English dub. Her portrayal retains the distinction between Aira's deliberately sweet public voice, her much more arrogant private speech and the greater intensity required during her transformed combat scenes.
Aira becomes a major focus of the first season through the Acrobatic Silky storyline. Episode 6 places her supernatural awakening at the center of the plot, while the following episode expands her connection with the yokai. Ayane Sakura later identified the conclusion of that storyline as her favorite sequence from Season 1.
She continues as part of the principal ensemble in Season 2. The official cast listing retains Sakura alongside the returning performers for Momo, Okarun, Seiko, Jiji and Turbo Granny. Her role increasingly shifts from newly empowered rival to established supernatural combatant within Momo and Okarun's group.
Aira is also represented extensively in official merchandise, including figures, acrylic stands, character goods and home-video artwork. Merchandise frequently distinguishes between her ordinary school appearance and her Acrobatic Silky transformation, reflecting the substantial visual difference between the two forms.
A stage adaptation of Dandadan scheduled for 2026 includes Aira among its principal characters, with Riko Tanaka cast in the role. The production extends the franchise into live performance while retaining the ensemble built around Momo and Okarun.
Reception
Reception
Aira placed fifth in the first official Dandadan character popularity poll with 14,271 votes. Okarun ranked first with 38,699, followed by Momo, Turbo Granny and Jiji. Aira's result placed her ahead of Seiko and the rest of the large supporting cast.
The official anime production has also treated her as one of the core secondary characters. Her Japanese voice actor Ayane Sakura appeared with the performers for Momo, Okarun, Jiji and Turbo Granny at the Jump Festa 2025 stage, where the production highlighted the first popularity poll's top ten and previewed Season 2.
Aira's Acrobatic Silky storyline became one of the first season's most discussed dramatic turns, particularly because it reframes a character initially introduced through vanity and school rivalry around grief and empathy. Sakura's own selection of the Episode 7 ending as her favorite Season 1 scene reflects the production's emphasis on that material.
Her transformed design has also contributed substantially to her visual identity. The contrast between Aira's polished school appearance and the long-haired, masked Acrobatic Silky form gives merchandise and promotional artwork two distinct versions of the character to emphasize.
The wider anime received substantial recognition for its visual presentation, including major attention to Naoyuki Onda's character designs. Aira's transformation is one of the clearest examples of the series' approach to giving ordinary high school characters radically different supernatural silhouettes while keeping their underlying features recognizable.
Her fifth-place showing in the official poll, continued inclusion in central cast promotion and recurring placement alongside Momo, Okarun and Jiji establish Aira as one of the franchise's principal supporting characters rather than a one-arc rival introduced solely for the Acrobatic Silky storyline.
