Jan

Jan is confused and frightened but continues moving through Brussels in search of answers. His amnesia means he cannot rely on memories of the outbreak's beginning to interpret what he sees.

He remains observant enough to recognize that the creatures around him are undergoing changes far beyond the familiar image of reanimated or infected humans. The city's transformed environment forces him to reconsider repeatedly what kind of catastrophe has occurred.

Jan's isolation also distinguishes his perspective from Hideo's group and the organized survivor communities in Japan. He has no established network explaining the ZQN to him and must interpret the evidence alone.

Jan has no established martial-arts training or specialized combat ability.

His survival depends on caution, mobility and his ability to navigate Brussels despite both memory loss and the presence of infected creatures.

Jan eventually begins displaying indications that the infection may be affecting him as well, further complicating the reliability of his perceptions and his ability to distinguish what is happening to the city from what is happening to his own body.

Jan's chapters provide one of the manga's clearest views of the outbreak outside Japan. He wanders through Brussels after inexplicably losing his memory and encounters increasingly deformed ZQN.

His experiences establish that the strange evolution of the infected is not restricted to the groups observed by Hideo. The same transformation is occurring on another continent.

Jan eventually reaches the Notre-Dame de Laeken area as military action intensifies around Brussels. His storyline ends without providing a definitive explanation for either his amnesia or the ultimate nature of the outbreak.

Jan's storyline is deliberately isolated from the principal Japanese cast. His most important personal motivation is connected to his family, but the manga gives him no sustained direct relationship with Hideo Suzuki, Hiromi Hayakari or the Japanese survivor groups.
