Houzukimaru

Houzukimaru is boastful, combative and governed by a strict preference for one-on-one fights. He respects strength and accepts the risk of death as part of an honest duel.

He is also remarkably lazy, initially sleeping while the other manifested spirits gather. That trait echoes Ikkaku’s complaint that his Bankai awakens slowly and must be roused through sustained combat.

In Shikai, Houzukimaru first extends into a spear. At the command “Split,” it separates into a three-section staff whose bladed segments are joined by chains, combining reach with abrupt changes of direction.

The pommel contains a blood-clotting ointment. This is a practical hidden feature rather than a healing power, allowing Ikkaku to close wounds during battle.

Ryūmon Hōzukimaru forms three enormous blades: one in each hand and a fan-shaped central blade behind Ikkaku. It has no elaborate special technique; its destructive force rises as the dragon crest fills with red, reaching full power only when the crest is complete. Damage sustained during its fight with Edrad Liones permanently weakens the repaired Bankai.

Ikkaku first reveals Houzukimaru’s Shikai while fighting Ichigo Kurosaki during the invasion of Soul Society. Its Bankai remains a secret from most of the Gotei 13 because Ikkaku fears that demonstrating it would lead to pressure to become a captain.

During the anime rebellion, the manifested Houzukimaru challenges Ikkaku and initially refuses to accept him as its master. Their shared fighting instincts and private knowledge of the weapon eventually restore their bond.

Ikkaku Madarame is Houzukimaru’s wielder and resembles the spirit in pride, laziness and love of direct combat. Their contentious exchanges conceal strong mutual understanding.

Yumichika Ayasegawa knows Ikkaku’s Bankai secret and recognizes the spirit’s identity. Ichigo Kurosaki faces Houzukimaru’s Shikai, while Edrad Liones forces Ikkaku to reveal its Bankai.
