Hiroto Honda

Honda is loyal, straightforward, protective, and prone to reacting emotionally when his friends are threatened. Although he frequently bickers with Jonouchi, their arguments rarely undermine their friendship, and Honda is quick to support him when a situation becomes serious.

He is less interested in games than Yuugi and initially struggles to understand why they matter so much to him. Over time, Honda becomes deeply invested in his friends' duels because he understands what those contests mean to them, even though he rarely develops comparable ambitions as a player himself.

Honda can panic when confronted with supernatural danger, but fear rarely prevents him from acting. His practical courage is most apparent when someone needs to be physically rescued, guarded, or carried away from danger.

Honda has no supernatural powers and is not primarily a Duel Monsters competitor. His value to the group comes instead from physical courage, strength, and willingness to act when problems cannot be solved through cards.

He participates in fights and rescue attempts throughout the series and is generally more physically capable than Yuugi. His streetwise background alongside Jonouchi gives him experience dealing with ordinary violence even if he is not portrayed as a trained martial artist.

Honda understands Duel Monsters sufficiently to follow important matches and occasionally plays when circumstances require it, but the series never presents him as an elite duelist.

Honda begins as Jonouchi's friend and participates in bullying Yuugi during the early school storyline. Yuugi's kindness eventually changes both boys' attitude toward him, and Honda becomes a reliable member of the group.

In Duelist Kingdom, Honda accompanies the others to Pegasus's island and supports Yuugi and Jonouchi throughout the tournament. He becomes particularly important during incidents involving Mokuba and the attempted takeover of KaibaCorp.

Honda remains involved during Battle City, where he helps protect the group's non-duelists while Yuugi and Jonouchi compete. His role repeatedly places him outside the central card games but inside the physical dangers surrounding them.

In anime-original storylines, Honda receives additional involvement in virtual worlds and other conflicts. During Noah's Virtual World incident, his mind is temporarily trapped after losing a duel, and he later regains his body when the group escapes the virtual system.

Katsuya Jonouchi is Honda's longtime best friend. They frequently insult and argue with each other, but Hiroto Honda's loyalty to Katsuya Jonouchi never seriously wavers.

Yuugi Mutou initially receives poor treatment from Honda, but Honda becomes one of Yuugi Mutou's closest friends after recognizing his kindness and courage.

Anzu Mazaki is part of Honda's core friendship group. Anzu Mazaki frequently acts as the voice of reason when Honda and Jonouchi become reckless.

Shizuka Kawai becomes an important person to Honda during Battle City. Honda develops a crush on Shizuka Kawai and is particularly eager to protect her.

Ryuuji Otogi becomes both a friend and romantic rival to Honda because Ryuuji Otogi is also attracted to Shizuka.
