Personality
Personality
Anzu is energetic, outspoken, compassionate, and strongly protective of her friends. She frequently serves as the person willing to challenge reckless behavior within the group, particularly when Jonouchi and Honda become carried away.
Friendship is extremely important to her. Anzu repeatedly encourages Yuugi and Jonouchi during difficult duels and refuses to abandon friends even when supernatural dangers make remaining with them dangerous. Her speeches about friendship become especially prominent in the Duel Monsters anime.
She is also independent and ambitious. Her desire to become a dancer gives her a personal goal outside the group's adventures, and she works part-time while planning for the possibility of studying dance overseas. She dislikes being treated as helpless and can respond forcefully when threatened or underestimated.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Anzu has no supernatural powers of her own, although her proximity to the Millennium Items repeatedly places her inside Shadow Games and other magical situations. She shows considerable courage under these circumstances and remains functional even when confronted with phenomena she cannot fight directly.
She is a competent Duel Monsters player despite rarely competing seriously. Her anime deck includes feminine and Fairy-type monsters such as Happy Lover and Magician of Faith. She defeats Jonouchi in an early practice duel and later demonstrates that she understands the game's mechanics well enough to recognize strategies during major tournament matches.
Dance is her primary personal skill and long-term ambition. She trains with the goal of becoming a professional dancer and considers pursuing that career abroad.
Story Role
Story Role
Anzu begins as Yuugi's longtime friend at Domino High School and witnesses the changes that follow his completion of the Millennium Puzzle. She gradually recognizes that Yuugi sometimes behaves like a completely different person and becomes fascinated by the confident personality emerging through him.
She accompanies Yuugi and Jonouchi to Duelist Kingdom, where she becomes one of their most dependable supporters. Although she is not a tournament entrant, she participates directly when the group encounters supernatural opponents and helps keep the friends together during Pegasus's schemes.
During Battle City, Anzu again travels with Yuugi's group and becomes entangled in Marik's plans. She also spends time with Yami Yuugi while attempting to help him investigate his identity and memories.
After the Pharaoh's identity is recovered, Anzu accompanies the group to Egypt and witnesses the final struggle surrounding his memories. She later watches Yuugi and Atem's Ceremonial Battle and accepts Atem's departure despite her feelings for him.
Relationships
Relationships
Yuugi Mutou is Anzu's childhood friend. She is protective of Yuugi Mutou and remains one of the people he trusts most throughout the series.
Yami Yuugi attracts Anzu's interest after she realizes he is distinct from Yuugi. She develops romantic feelings for Yami Yuugi and wants to help him recover his identity. She ultimately accepts that Atem must leave the living world after completing his journey.
Katsuya Jonouchi becomes one of Anzu's closest friends despite her initial irritation with his behavior toward Yuugi. She regularly supports Katsuya Jonouchi during his tournament duels.
Hiroto Honda is another member of Anzu's core group. She frequently reprimands Hiroto Honda and Jonouchi when they behave foolishly but trusts both when serious danger arises.
Mai Kujaku becomes a friend during Duelist Kingdom and later adventures. Anzu sympathizes with Mai Kujaku's difficulties and considers her part of the wider group.
Marik Ishtar uses the Millennium Rod to control Anzu during Battle City, placing her directly inside his campaign against Yuugi.
