Haru

Haru is independent, direct, perceptive, and more emotionally guarded than her friendly manner suggests. She dislikes being patronized, particularly because her species and unusually small body cause other animals to instinctively treat her as weak, young, or in need of protection. Sexual relationships initially offer one of the few situations in which she feels partners interact with her as an adult rather than as something delicate.

This attitude contributes to her reputation. Haru does not deny having relationships with several male students and refuses to perform shame simply because other animals expect it. The resulting bullying leaves her socially isolated, but she regards maintaining her independence as preferable to winning approval by pretending to be someone else. The official anime description specifically notes her casual relationships and the bullying that results from them.

Her confidence has limits. Haru has internalized the reality that a small rabbit can be killed very easily, and this occasionally produces a fatalistic willingness to accept danger rather than believe she has real control over it. That resignation sits uneasily beside the defiant personality she shows in daily life.

Haru is also compassionate without being sentimental. She cares about flowers, notices subtle emotional changes in other animals, and becomes concerned for both Legoshi and Louis even when they frustrate her. She values honesty strongly, which is one reason Legoshi's evasiveness about his feelings can make their relationship difficult despite his obvious devotion.

Haru possesses no exceptional combat ability and has little realistic chance of physically overpowering a large carnivore. Her Netherland dwarf rabbit body makes size and reach genuine limitations, and much of her characterization comes from refusing to let those limitations determine her worth.

Her strongest practical skills involve horticulture. Haru runs Cherryton's gardening club alone, tending flowers and maintaining the club's grounds with considerable knowledge and care. The work provides both a private refuge from school gossip and a place where she can exercise control over something living without being judged according to species stereotypes.

She is highly socially perceptive. Haru frequently recognizes emotional motives that Legoshi has difficulty articulating and is quick to notice when another animal is behaving toward her from pity, desire, guilt, or genuine respect.

Haru is also psychologically resilient. Being preyed upon, bullied, socially ostracized, and drawn into conflicts involving powerful carnivores does not eliminate her ability to make independent decisions. Her willingness to challenge Legoshi is particularly important because his physical power could easily create an unequal relationship if she accepted every decision he made for her.

Her instincts as a prey animal remain strong. Sudden carnivore aggression can trigger involuntary fear responses even when she consciously trusts the individual involved, creating a recurring distinction between rational affection and the biological reactions neither Haru nor Legoshi can simply choose to eliminate.

Haru enters Legoshi's life when he encounters her outside the drama club building at night and instinctively attacks her. He stops before killing her, and she does not initially know the identity of the wolf responsible. Their next interaction takes place under completely different circumstances when Legoshi visits the gardening club.

Haru misinterprets his awkward behavior as a request for sex, forcing Legoshi into an encounter for which he is completely unprepared. Rather than exploiting his embarrassment, she gradually becomes curious about the strange wolf who appears frightened of her despite being physically capable of killing her effortlessly.

Her relationship with Louis further complicates the situation. Haru and Louis have a private sexual relationship despite enormous differences in social standing: Louis is Cherryton's celebrated red deer and prospective Beastar, while Haru is an ostracized gardening-club member. Their attachment is genuine but constrained by Louis' determination to maintain the public identity expected of him.

Haru's abduction by the Shishigumi becomes a turning point. Legoshi enters the Black Market to rescue her, while Louis faces a crisis between the public ambitions controlling his life and the private person he cares about. The experience also forces Haru to confront just how easily society's food hierarchy can become literal.

Afterward, Haru and Legoshi attempt to understand what a relationship between a wolf and a rabbit could realistically mean. Their feelings become more explicit, but the biological danger between them does not disappear simply because affection exists.

While Legoshi investigates Tem's murderer, Haru remains at Cherryton and becomes frustrated by how much information he withholds. The official second-season material shows her continuing to worry both about Legoshi and Louis as their lives move increasingly into dangerous territory.

In the final portion of the story, Haru continues her education while Legoshi lives outside school. Their different lives complicate communication, especially as Legoshi becomes involved with Yahya and Melon. Netflix's Final Season synopsis specifically places Haru's future and her relationship with Legoshi at the center of the conclusion.

Melon's growing interest in Haru makes her directly relevant to the final conflict rather than simply someone Legoshi wants to protect from afar. The series ultimately leaves Haru and Legoshi committed to attempting a future together despite the social, biological, and personal difficulties surrounding an interspecies carnivore-herbivore relationship.

Legoshi begins as the unidentified carnivore who nearly attacks Haru and later becomes the animal she develops her deepest romantic connection with. Legoshi's instinct to protect her is initially appealing but also frustrating because Haru refuses to become a passive object of protection. Their relationship works only when he begins recognizing that she must be allowed to choose risk for herself.

Louis is Haru's secret lover during their school years. Despite genuine affection, Louis refuses to build a public future with her because his social role, arranged expectations, and obsession with becoming a Beastar take priority. Haru understands this more clearly than he initially realizes and never expects their private relationship to become conventional.

Mizuchi is one of Haru's principal school bullies. Mizuchi's resentment toward Haru centers on Haru's relationship with a male rabbit Mizuchi considered part of her own social territory, contributing substantially to Haru's bad reputation at Cherryton.

Juno initially views Haru as a romantic rival because of her interest in Legoshi. When Juno spends time helping in the gardening club, however, she finds herself unexpectedly affected by Haru's openness and charm. The anime specifically depicts Juno recognizing that her fear of herbivore appeal was more complicated than simple contempt.

Haru's Mother, Haru's Father, Haru's Older Brother, and Haru's Older Sister form a comparatively affectionate rabbit household. Haru's family life contrasts with her isolation at school and demonstrates that her guardedness was not simply produced by an absence of familial affection.

Melon becomes a disturbing presence in Haru's later life. Melon's mixed carnivore-herbivore biology and distorted relationship with appetite make his interactions with her especially dangerous, while also bringing her directly into the conflict that has been consuming Legoshi.
