Gyosen no Senchou

The captain is practical and transactional. He is willing to help Hideo and Hiromi, but his assistance is tied to his own family's needs rather than uncomplicated altruism.

His concern for his grandson is central to his decisions. In a world where rumors of treatment or vaccination can determine where survivors travel, the possibility of protecting the child gives him a reason to undertake a dangerous journey.

He is also resourceful enough to keep a fishing vessel operational after normal infrastructure has collapsed.

The captain can operate and navigate a fishing boat, allowing him to avoid many of the dangers concentrated on land.

His apparent previous connection to a U.S. military base has also left him able to understand English, a useful skill when survivors encounter foreign communications or information.

He has no established superhuman abilities. His major advantage is control of a working vessel and the practical seamanship required to use it.

The captain enters Hideo and Hiromi's journey when a giant ZQN threatens them. His intervention provides an escape from a situation they cannot easily solve on foot.

He agrees to transport them toward Tokyo, but the arrangement is linked to his desire to obtain vaccination for his grandson. The boat opens a new route through Japan after roads and urban areas have become increasingly dangerous.

The voyage also brings Hideo and Hiromi back toward the region where the largest survivor communities and increasingly bizarre ZQN formations are converging.

Hideo Suzuki is rescued by the captain and becomes one of his passengers on the journey toward Tokyo.

Hiromi Hayakari is rescued alongside Hideo Suzuki and travels on the captain's boat.

The captain's grandson is the family member whose protection motivates his demand for access to vaccination in exchange for transportation.
