Emma

Emma is practical, loving, resilient, and strongly devoted to her children. Years of insecurity have made her more realistic about Viking attacks than Einar, who still believes courage alone may be enough to defend their home.

She nevertheless continues cultivating the farm rather than surrendering to fear. Her everyday persistence gives Einar's childhood home the stability he remembers after losing it.

Emma has no combat ability and is presented as an ordinary rural woman.

Her skills are those necessary for running a farming household: agricultural labor, domestic work, resource management, and raising children under difficult conditions.

Her resilience is practical rather than martial. She continues maintaining the family's livelihood despite living in a region repeatedly threatened by warfare.

Emma appears during Einar's introduction, establishing his life before enslavement. She has already experienced the loss of her husband and understands how vulnerable an isolated farming family is to armed raiders.

When another Viking attack reaches their settlement, the family attempts to flee.

Emma is struck down during the raid while Einar and Lotta are captured. Lotta is subsequently killed and Einar is taken away to be sold as a slave.

The loss of his mother and sister becomes foundational to Einar's worldview. His hatred of war and his desire to create and cultivate rather than destroy are inseparable from the family and farmland taken from him.

Einar is Emma's son. She raises him to work the land and remains one of the most important people in his memories.

Lotta is Emma's daughter and lives with her and Einar on the family farm.
