Personality
Personality
Dyri receives little individual characterization, but his repeated willingness to follow Sigurd across dangerous territory establishes loyalty as his clearest trait.
He belongs to a group whose relationship with Sigurd is noticeably warmer than the strict master-servant structures common elsewhere in the series. They complain, joke, and argue around him while continuing to follow his lead.
That loyalty becomes increasingly meaningful as Sigurd's original mission grows into a dangerous journey far beyond what any of them expected.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Dyri is physically capable of accompanying an armed Icelandic party through long-distance travel and dangerous environments.
He has enough familiarity with weapons and fighting to remain with Sigurd during the Baltic Sea conflict, though the manga does not establish a specialized technique or single out his individual combat ability.
His primary value is as a loyal member of a coordinated entourage rather than an elite warrior.
Story Role
Story Role
Dyri first appears after Gudrid escapes her arranged marriage and Sigurd sets out to retrieve her.
He accompanies Sigurd's entourage as they follow Thorfinn's party east, eventually becoming entangled in the political and military struggle surrounding the Jomsvikings.
The Baltic conflict forces Sigurd and his companions through battles, captivity, and encounters with warriors far beyond their own experience. Dyri remains with Sigurd through the ordeal rather than abandoning him when the original purpose of the journey becomes increasingly irrelevant.
After Sigurd earns a ship and learns that Gudrid loves Thorfinn, Dyri remains present as Sigurd decides to release her from their marriage rather than force her to return to Iceland.
Dyri also follows Sigurd home and witnesses the confrontation in which he rejects Halfdan's planned succession and chooses an independent life.
Relationships
Relationships
Sigurd is Dyri's friend, employer, and leader. Dyri accompanies him throughout his pursuit of Gudrid and the Baltic Sea War.
Gudrid is the woman Sigurd initially intends to bring back to Iceland, making her flight the reason Dyri's journey begins.
Helgi and Olm are fellow members of Sigurd's entourage and travel beside Dyri.
Halfdan is Sigurd's father and the household authority under which Dyri initially serves indirectly.
Thorfinn becomes increasingly important to Sigurd's development during the journey in which Dyri participates.
