Personality
Personality
Nakabachi is proud, defensive and desperate for recognition. He reacts angrily when Okabe publicly challenges his lecture, treating criticism as an attack on his standing rather than an opportunity for scientific debate.
His fascination with time travel stretches back many years. Ambition gradually becomes entangled with resentment as his own progress fails to match the achievements of researchers around him.
His insecurity becomes particularly destructive where his daughter is concerned. Rather than celebrating her scientific success, he grows jealous of work that surpasses his own.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Nakabachi has no supernatural abilities. He has spent years studying theoretical time travel, although the quality and originality of the work he presents publicly are questionable.
His knowledge is sufficient for him to understand the importance of serious time-travel research when it comes into his possession. His greatest impact comes not from personally constructing a working machine but from what he does with research produced by others.
Story Role
Story Role
Nakabachi's time-travel conference at Radio Kaikan is the reason Okabe visits the building at the beginning of Steins;Gate. His presentation becomes one of the first signs that theories Okabe previously encountered online are intersecting with real events.
He remains largely outside the laboratory's Alpha-world-line experiments, but his importance changes dramatically when the story returns to the Beta attractor field.
Dr. Nakabachi's real name is Shouichi Makise, and he is Kurisu's estranged father. He steals Kurisu's time-travel thesis and takes it to Russia, where the research helps ignite an international race for time-machine technology that leads toward World War III.
Relationships
Relationships
Kurisu Makise is Nakabachi's daughter. Their earlier bond deteriorates as his jealousy of her scientific achievements overwhelms his role as her father.
Rintarou Okabe disrupts Nakabachi's Radio Kaikan conference by accusing him of presenting John Titor's ideas as his own.
Yukitaka Akiha knew Nakabachi during his earlier research years and supported his interest in time travel.
