Dr. Giovanni

Giovanni is intelligent, secretive and methodical. He views the world through experimentation and has little hesitation about treating dangerous phenomena as opportunities for research. His calm, elongated manner of speaking reinforces the impression that he is always observing rather than participating emotionally.

He is fascinated by insects and biological adaptation. This interest extends beyond ordinary study into experimentation on bodies, pyrokinetic abilities and the relationship between living organisms and Adolla.

Behind his professional demeanor lies extreme fanaticism and cruelty. Giovanni values knowledge and the Evangelist's objectives above individual life, manipulating vulnerable people and conducting experiments without concern for their suffering.

Giovanni is a Second Generation pyrokinetic, allowing him to manipulate existing flames rather than create fire directly. He supplements this ability with extensive scientific knowledge and mechanical modifications.

His plague-doctor clothing conceals a variety of equipment. Giovanni employs mechanical limbs, electrical attacks and devices designed to counter pyrokinetics, making him dangerous even when an opponent understands his generation of fire control.

Giovanni progressively modifies his own body using insects and biological experimentation. His later form functions as a collective of numerous insects coordinated through specialized components, making conventional attacks against a single human body increasingly ineffective.

He can also employ parasitic insects to interfere with other bodies. Late in the story, this capability allows part of his consciousness to take control of Yuu after infecting him.

Giovanni first appears publicly as Company 3's captain at a meeting of the Special Fire Force captains. His scientific reputation and connection to Haijima make him one of the institutional figures positioned to study Shinra's Adolla Burst.

He later visits Vulcan Joseph's workshop and attempts to recruit the engineer. Vulcan's hostility toward him reveals that their connection predates the Fire Force's current investigation.

Giovanni is exposed as a White-Clad operative during the attack on Vulcan's workshop. He seeks the Key to Amaterasu and commands forces sent against Company 8, while Lisa Isaribi is revealed as an infiltrator working under his control.

His deeper history connects his family to the construction of Amaterasu and to knowledge preserved across generations. Giovanni's obsession with Adolla eventually leads him to transform himself extensively and participate directly in preparations for the Cataclysm.

Vulcan Joseph is Giovanni's principal personal enemy. Giovanni studied alongside Vulcan's father under Vulcan's grandfather and later became associated with Haijima, creating a bitter divide between him and the Joseph family.

Lisa Isaribi is one of Giovanni's subordinates and victims. He raises and conditions her to obey him, then sends her into Vulcan's workshop as an infiltrator and repeatedly exploits her fear to maintain control.

Yuu becomes leverage Giovanni uses against Vulcan Joseph. Giovanni seriously injures him at the workshop and later infects him with a parasite capable of carrying Giovanni's consciousness.

The Evangelist is the figure to whom Giovanni gives fanatical loyalty, and his research ultimately serves the White-Clad's effort to bring about another Cataclysm.

Shinra Kusakabe interests Giovanni because of his Adolla Burst, making Shinra both a valuable research subject and an obstacle to the White-Clad.

Akitaru Ōbi and the rest of Company 8 become Giovanni's enemies as their investigations expose his activities.
