David Shield

David is an accomplished scientist whose career is built around helping heroes rather than becoming a front-line hero himself. He is compassionate, intellectually curious, and deeply invested in the potential of support technology to improve hero work.

His strongest emotional attachment outside his family is his friendship with All Might. David believes intensely in the Symbol of Peace and becomes frightened by the implications of his friend's declining strength. That fear compromises the judgment of a man who ordinarily approaches problems rationally.

As a father, David supports Melissa Shield even though she lacks a Quirk. Rather than treating that as a barrier to meaningful hero work, he encourages her aptitude for engineering and provides an example of contributing to hero society through technology.

David is regarded as one of the world's leading scientists and support-item engineers. His work includes multiple generations of All Might's hero costumes, designed from advanced materials capable of surviving the extraordinary stresses created by One For All.

His most consequential invention is the Quirk Amplification Device, developed with Samuel Abraham. The technology can dramatically increase the strength of a user's Quirk, but its potential danger causes the project to be shut down and the prototype confiscated.

Squirmy Fingers allows David to bend his fingers farther than an ordinary person can. Although unsuitable for conventional combat, the fine flexibility assists him in delicate engineering and mechanical work.

David first becomes connected to All Might during the latter's time studying in the United States. After the young hero rescues him from an accident, David repairs and redesigns his costume, beginning a friendship and working partnership that continues throughout All Might's American career.

In Two Heroes, David invites circumstances that place him at the center of the I-Island crisis. Alarmed by All Might's declining power, he becomes convinced that his amplification technology could restore his friend's former strength.

David and Samuel arrange what David believes will be a staged villain attack so the confiscated device can be recovered. Samuel instead hires genuine criminals led by Wolfram, turning the deception into an actual terrorist takeover. David ultimately recognizes that his fear of losing the Symbol of Peace caused him to ignore the new generation already prepared to carry hope forward.

All Might is David's longtime friend and former partner. David created his American-era costumes, knows about his severe injury and weakened physical state, and remains deeply protective of him, although All Might does not initially reveal the truth of One For All to David.

Melissa Shield is David's daughter. He encourages her scientific talent and supports her despite her being Quirkless. Melissa follows his path into support engineering and shares his desire to help heroes through technology.

Samuel Abraham is David's assistant and research partner. They work together on the Quirk Amplification Device, but Samuel's resentment over the project's suppression leads him to secretly involve real criminals in David's recovery scheme.

Wolfram becomes David's captor during the I-Island incident. David initially believes the supposed villains involved in his plan are performers, only to discover that Wolfram and his crew are genuine criminals.

Izuku Midoriya meets David through All Might and Melissa. Izuku's determination, together with the other students' actions during the I-Island crisis, helps David recognize the promise of the generation that will follow All Might.
