Personality
Personality
Dai Kaiou is relaxed, eccentric, playful, and far less ceremonious than his rank suggests. He wears ordinary-looking clothes, drives around his enormous planet, and spends time listening to music rather than maintaining a visibly formal court.
He also enjoys martial arts and takes genuine interest in exceptional fighters arriving in the Other World. His casual demeanor disappears somewhat when he realizes that Goku and Pikkon have reached a level that could force him to honor promises he never expected anyone to fulfill.
Unlike the directional Kais, he generally stays above their petty rivalries and acts as the senior figure expected to resolve disputes.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Dai Kaiou is the highest-ranking of Universe 7's ordinary Kais, positioned above the four directional deities responsible for the north, south, east, and west quadrants.
His exact combat power is never demonstrated directly. The anime presents him as an exceptionally knowledgeable martial artist whom deceased warriors hope to train under.
He can observe events across the Other World and presides over the enormous community of heroic martial artists who have been permitted to retain their bodies after death.
Story Role
Story Role
Dai Kaiou becomes directly involved after Goku reaches his world following the Cell Games. The directional Kais organize the Other World Tournament in honor of the recent death of North Kai.
Fighters representing all four quadrants compete for the stated prize of receiving personal training from the Grand Kai.
Goku and Pikkon dominate the tournament and eventually meet in the final. Both are disqualified after touching the arena ceiling, allowing the Grand Kai to avoid immediately choosing between them.
He nevertheless acknowledges their extraordinary strength and implies that both must continue training before receiving his personal instruction.
Dai Kaiou is later referenced and briefly appears in additional anime material, including events surrounding Majin Buu and Fusion Reborn.
Relationships
Relationships
North Kai, Nishi no Kaiou, Higashi no Kaiou, and South Kai serve beneath Dai Kaiou as the four directional Kais.
Goku becomes one of the strongest deceased fighters to compete on Dai Kaiou's world.
Pikkon is another elite Other World fighter whose ability draws the Grand Kai's attention.
Higashi no Kaioushin occupies a still higher divine rank within Universe 7's hierarchy.
