Daddy Masterson

Daddy is stern and intimidating when dealing with criminals, but his severity is tempered by restraint. He does not shoot impulsively and prefers tests of skill that reveal an opponent’s character. Although Usopp initially antagonizes him through boasting, Daddy recognizes the young sniper’s potential once he stops running away.

His priorities changed after becoming a father. Daddy abandoned a promising Marine career because remaining in dangerous service could have left his daughter without a parent. He accepts the reduced prestige of bounty hunting in exchange for being present in her life.

Daddy also respects genuine marksmanship regardless of whether it comes from a Marine or pirate. His defeat by Usopp’s father left him with admiration rather than a desire for revenge, and he encourages Usopp after recognizing the same ability and resolve.

Daddy is an elite marksman capable of hitting distant targets with exceptional precision. During his Marine career, he was regarded as one of the organization’s finest snipers and a rising officer at Headquarters. He later applies those skills to bounty hunting, capturing multiple wanted criminals without apparent difficulty.

His eyesight, timing, and control allow him to establish demanding shooting challenges. When testing Usopp, he selects a distant weather vane as the target and expects the shot to be made on the first attempt. He immediately recognizes that Usopp has exceeded the requirement by striking a much smaller gem on the vane.

Daddy also appears physically capable in close confrontations. He subdues criminals who attempt to ambush him, though firearms and tactical composure remain his defining advantages.

Daddy appears in the anime’s Loguetown arc after his daughter, Carol, buys a pair of sniper goggles that Usopp wanted. Unaware of Daddy’s identity, Usopp exaggerates his reputation and attempts to intimidate them, prompting Daddy to challenge him.

Usopp initially flees after discovering that Daddy is a famous bounty hunter. When he returns and accepts the possibility of death rather than continue disgracing himself, Daddy explains that he once dueled Yasopp. Yasopp defeated him but spared his life after learning that he had a daughter.

Instead of conducting a lethal duel, Daddy orders Usopp to hit the distant weather vane. Usopp succeeds and strikes its nearly invisible gem, proving his talent. Daddy acknowledges him as Yasopp’s son, while Carol gives Usopp the goggles that later become part of his equipment. These events belong to the anime continuity and do not occur in the manga.

Carol is Daddy’s daughter and the central consideration behind his departure from the Marines. Daddy is affectionate and protective toward Carol, while she takes pride in his reputation and purchases the sniper goggles as his birthday present.

Usopp first clashes with Daddy over those goggles. Daddy eventually tests Usopp’s courage and marksmanship, then encourages him to continue into the Grand Line after recognizing his ability.

Yasopp defeated Daddy in a duel during Daddy’s Marine career. Daddy respects Yasopp for sparing him after hearing about his daughter and recognizes the father’s skill in the son.

Smoker entered the Marines at approximately the same time as Daddy and remained his friend after Daddy resigned. Smoker respects his former colleague’s skill, knows Carol, and accepts the captured criminals Daddy delivers in Loguetown.
