Personality
Personality
Conrad is calm, charismatic, intelligent, and exceptionally determined. His original ideals closely resemble those later pursued by Asta: he wants a Clover Kingdom where birth, social rank, and magical ability do not determine a person's worth.
His experiences gradually turn that idealism into extremism. Conrad concludes that discrimination is so deeply embedded within the kingdom that reform cannot succeed, and he becomes willing to sacrifice the existing society to create the egalitarian world he imagines.
He does not see himself as acting out of simple hatred. Conrad sincerely believes his plan will eliminate suffering, which makes Asta's refusal particularly important: both reject the kingdom's inequality, but only Asta remains committed to changing society without destroying its people.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Conrad uses Key Magic, creating magical keys capable of opening and closing spatial gateways and sealing magical power. Its most dangerous property allows him to steal and store the magic of other mages, then use those attributes himself.
His extensive collection gives him access to numerous forms of magic and makes his fighting style extremely difficult to predict. As a former Wizard King, Conrad also possesses extraordinary mana, physical ability, magical control, and combat experience.
Conrad can draw upon Elsdocia, a magical sword capable of storing enormous quantities of magic gathered from generations of Wizard Kings. Combined with Key Magic, this gives him resources on a national scale.
Story Role
Story Role
Conrad serves as the principal antagonist of Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King. He emerges during the Triumph festival and begins executing a plan intended to remake the Clover Kingdom according to his vision of equality.
He recruits three former Wizard Kings—Jester Galandros, Edward Avalaché, and Princia Funnybunny—whose own experiences left them alienated from the kingdom they once protected.
Conrad intends to use Elsdocia and the accumulated magic of the kingdom to destroy the existing Clover Kingdom and recreate its population, believing this will produce a society free of discrimination. Asta rejects the idea that equality justifies sacrificing everyone currently alive and becomes Conrad's principal opponent.
Their final battle pits Conrad's enormous collection of stolen magic against Asta's Anti Magic. Asta ultimately defeats him while insisting that becoming Wizard King means protecting and changing the kingdom rather than discarding its people.
Relationships
Relationships
Asta becomes Conrad's ideological and physical opponent. Conrad recognizes similarities between their desire for equality but rejects Asta's belief that the existing kingdom can be changed.
Julius Novachrono succeeds Conrad in the broader line of Wizard Kings and participates in the effort to stop his return.
Jester Galandros, Edward Avalaché, and Princia Funnybunny are former Wizard Kings revived to assist Conrad's plan.
Milly Maxwell was an important companion from Conrad's earlier life whose shared desire for social reform influenced him deeply.
