Background
Background
Chrollo was raised in Meteor City, a vast settlement populated by people who officially do not exist. Governments and databases maintain no conventional records of its inhabitants, allowing outsiders to exploit the community while making crimes against its residents difficult to investigate. The city’s refusal to abandon its people later becomes central to the Phantom Troupe’s collective identity.
As a child, Chrollo was gentle, curious, and unusually gifted with languages. He spent time with Pakunoda, Franklin Bordeau, Shalnark, Uvogin, Machi Komacine, Nobunaga Hazama, Phinks Magcub, and Feitan Portor, long before they became feared criminals.
Chrollo and Franklin searched the refuse arriving in Meteor City for videotapes discarded by wealthier societies. After finding a recording of the fictional heroes known as the Power Cleaners, Chrollo organized a dubbed performance for the city’s children. He translated the dialogue, voiced several characters, wrote additional material, and brought together friends whose rivalries had previously divided them.
Sarasa, one of the youngest children in the group, helped obtain further recordings and participated enthusiastically in the performances. Chrollo’s work gave the children a shared project and revealed the leadership, acting ability, and organizational intelligence he would later apply to the Phantom Troupe.
Sarasa is abducted, tortured, and murdered by criminals who leave her dismembered body outside Meteor City. Chrollo reads the killers’ written message alone and conceals its contents from the other children. He subsequently resolves to become a feared criminal, build an information network that can draw predators toward Meteor City, and find those responsible.
Personality
Personality
Chrollo is composed, courteous, and emotionally controlled even in dangerous situations. He can converse calmly with assassins hired to kill him, analyze an opponent while injured, and accept the possibility of death without visible panic. This stillness often makes his intentions harder to assess than the more openly violent behavior of his followers.
He has a philosophical interest in identity, motivation, and human behavior. When Gon Freecss asks how the Troupe can kill people unconnected to them, Chrollo pauses because he finds the question difficult to answer. He considers whether understanding his own motives might provide a key to understanding himself.
Chrollo treats the Phantom Troupe as an organism whose individual members are replaceable. The leader is the Spider’s head, but the group should continue if that head is severed. He explicitly prioritizes the survival of the organization over his own rescue, a principle that can conflict with the personal attachment other members feel toward him.
His apparent detachment is not an absence of emotion. Chrollo mourns dead companions, honors their wishes, and allows himself private expressions of grief. He simply refuses to let those feelings supersede what he regards as the Spider’s continued purpose.
Chrollo is also an actor. His quiet criminal persona develops from the same linguistic aptitude and performance skill he displayed as a child. He can adopt a harmless manner, impersonate another person’s appearance through Nen, and manipulate an audience’s attention while concealing the structure of a larger plan.
Appearance
Appearance

Chrollo is a slim, muscular young man with black hair and dark eyes. A cross-shaped tattoo marks the center of his forehead, and orb-shaped earrings hang from both ears. His facial features are composed and symmetrical, contributing to an appearance less physically imposing than his combat ability suggests.
His best-known clothing is a long black coat with a large inverted cross on the back and a fur-trimmed collar. He commonly leaves the coat open over a bare chest or simple shirt, pairing it with dark trousers and shoes. The religious imagery in the design does not correspond to a confirmed personal faith.
Chrollo changes his appearance when avoiding detection. During parts of the Yorknew City operation, he wears his hair down instead of slicking it back and covers the forehead tattoo with a bandage. The resulting look is ordinary enough for him to move among civilians without immediate recognition.
In childhood, Chrollo wears practical clothing assembled from materials available in Meteor City. His hair falls naturally across his forehead, and he lacks the severe presentation associated with the adult Troupe leader. His expressions are more animated, particularly during the Power Cleaners performances.
On the Black Whale, Chrollo adopts darker, relatively plain clothing suited to concealment aboard the ship. His forehead tattoo remains the most stable feature across his adult designs, even as his hairstyle and outer garments change.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Chrollo is a Specialist whose Nen ability revolves around stealing and using the abilities of other people. He has advanced command of Nen fundamentals and can conceal his presence, reinforce his body, analyze unfamiliar techniques, and shift aura efficiently during close combat.
Skill Hunter manifests as a book called Bandit’s Secret. To steal an ability, Chrollo must witness it directly, ask the owner questions about it and receive answers, have the owner place a palm against the handprint on the book’s cover, and complete all requirements within one hour. Once stolen, the original owner loses access to the ability.
A stolen technique is recorded on a page containing information about its former owner and operation. Chrollo ordinarily opens the book to that page and holds it in his right hand while using the ability. If the original owner dies, the corresponding page generally disappears, although Nen strengthened by death can remain.
Chrollo compensates for the restrictions of individual techniques through planning. He researches an opponent, selects abilities with compatible activation conditions, determines an effective order, and prepares the physical environment in which the combination will be used. His strength lies not merely in the number of stolen abilities but in treating them as components of a larger system.
He is also an exceptional hand-to-hand fighter. Chrollo avoids simultaneous attacks from Silva and Zeno Zoldyck, injures Silva with a poisoned knife, and survives exchanges intended to kill him. Zeno judges that a serious one-on-one battle between them would have an uncertain outcome if Chrollo fought to win rather than attempting to steal an ability.
Named Techniques
Named Techniques
-
Skill Hunter: Bandit’s Secret — Chrollo’s primary Specialist ability. It steals other Nen abilities after four conditions are completed within one hour and stores them in a conjured book.
-
Double Face: Bookmark Theme — A bookmark added to Bandit’s Secret. It keeps one page’s ability active after the book is closed or opened elsewhere, freeing Chrollo’s hands and allowing two stolen abilities to operate together.
-
Indoor Fish — Conjures dark fish that swim through sealed indoor spaces and consume human flesh. Victims remain alive and feel no pain while the ability is active, with the damage becoming real when the fish disappear.
-
Fun Fun Cloth — A stolen Conjuration ability originally belonging to Owl. The cloth can shrink and contain objects or people wrapped inside it, then restore them when released.
-
Lovely Ghostwriter — A stolen ability originally belonging to Neon Nostrade. It produces four-line prophetic poems covering the coming weeks, though the user cannot predict their own future.
-
Gallery Fake — An ability borrowed from Kortopi. By touching an object with the left hand, Chrollo creates a nonliving copy with the right. Human replicas function as corpses rather than living people.
-
Black Voice — An ability borrowed from Shalnark. Antennae inserted into targets allow them to be controlled through a mobile phone.
-
Order Stamp — Conjures a stamp used to control puppets. Stamped copies obey verbal orders but retain limitations based on the ability’s definition of a human and a puppet.
-
Convert Hands — The left and right palms bear different symbols. Touching another person with one hand makes Chrollo resemble that person; contact with the other alters the target to resemble him. Using both hands exchanges their appearances completely.
-
The Sun and Moon — An ability stolen from Meteor City’s former elder. Chrollo places a sun mark with one hand and a moon mark with the other; the marks explode when they touch. The ability remains in Bandit’s Secret through post-mortem Nen.
-
Teleportation — An unnamed stolen ability used to move another person instantly. Its range, activation conditions, and original owner remain undisclosed.
-
Ben’s Knife — Chrollo carries a knife forged by the serial killer Ben. The blade is coated in a paralytic poison strong enough to affect Silva, though Silva’s conditioning limits its effect.
Relationships
Relationships
Pakunoda — Pakunoda is one of Chrollo’s oldest companions and understands him with unusual emotional clarity. She helps perform the dubbed Power Cleaners material as a child and later serves the Troupe through memory-based Nen. When Kurapika captures Chrollo, Pakunoda chooses to preserve him and share the truth with the Spider even though doing so violates Kurapika’s conditions and costs her life.
Uvogin — Uvogin initially clashes with Chrollo during childhood but becomes impressed by his acting and leadership. He agrees to play the principal hero in their performance and later declares that Chrollo should lead the group. After Uvogin’s death, Chrollo conducts the Yorknew massacre as a requiem for him.
Franklin Bordeau — Franklin is among Chrollo’s earliest friends and helps him recover discarded tapes in Meteor City. As an adult he remains one of the Troupe’s most stable members and consistently supports preserving the Spider’s rules.
Shalnark — Shalnark assists Chrollo’s childhood performances and later provides technical intelligence to the Troupe. Chrollo borrows Black Voice for his battle against Hisoka. Shalnark’s subsequent murder intensifies Chrollo’s pursuit of Hisoka aboard the Black Whale.
Kortopi — Kortopi’s Gallery Fake is central to several Troupe operations and to Chrollo’s battle preparations. Hisoka kills Kortopi after the Heaven’s Arena fight, removing Gallery Fake from Chrollo’s available combinations.
Machi Komacine — Machi is a founding member who has known Chrollo since childhood. She respects his authority but retains independent judgment, including strong personal instincts about threats to the Spider.
Nobunaga Hazama — Nobunaga accepts Chrollo as the Spider’s head and shares the group’s attachment to Uvogin. He becomes more emotionally volatile after the loss of founding members, while Chrollo generally maintains strategic control.
Phinks Magcub — Phinks follows Chrollo’s leadership but opposes sacrificing the Spider’s principles solely to save him. During Chrollo’s captivity, that commitment brings him into conflict with members prioritizing the leader’s immediate survival.
Feitan Portor — Feitan is a founding Troupe member and one of its principal fighters. He accepts Chrollo’s authority while supporting the rule that the group must continue even if its leader dies.
Shizuku Murasaki — Shizuku joins after the Troupe’s founding and follows Chrollo’s plans during the Yorknew operation. Chrollo uses Lovely Ghostwriter to interpret a prophecy foretelling danger to her and other members.
Bonolenov Ndongo — Bonolenov respects Chrollo’s strategic judgment and later seeks his assistance because his own transformation ability is poorly suited to identifying Hisoka. Chrollo incorporates him into the Black Whale search.
Hisoka Morow — Hisoka enters the Phantom Troupe under false pretenses because he wants to fight Chrollo. He removes his fake spider tattoo after Kurapika seals Chrollo’s Nen, then waits until the leader’s abilities return. Chrollo defeats him at Heaven’s Arena through a prepared combination of stolen techniques, but Hisoka revives through post-mortem Nen and begins killing Troupe members.
Kurapika — Kurapika hunts the Phantom Troupe for the massacre of the Kurta Clan and identifies Chrollo as the Spider’s head. He captures Chrollo, places Judgment Chain around his heart, and forbids him from using Nen or communicating with the Troupe. Chrollo remains calm during captivity because he believes the Spider can survive his death.
Silva Zoldyck — Silva previously fought Chrollo and later accepts a contract to kill him during the Yorknew conflict. Chrollo regards him as a valuable opponent and attempts to create an opportunity to steal his ability.
Zeno Zoldyck — Zeno analyzes Skill Hunter while fighting Chrollo and correctly recognizes that the leader is delaying the battle to study their abilities. Chrollo openly asks who would win a genuine duel, showing professional curiosity rather than resentment.
Neon Nostrade — Chrollo targets Neon for Lovely Ghostwriter. He approaches her under a false identity, gains her trust through conversation, and completes the conditions needed to steal the fortune-telling ability.
Owl — Owl belongs to the Shadow Beasts and originally owns Fun Fun Cloth. The Troupe captures and interrogates him, allowing Chrollo to add the ability to Bandit’s Secret.
Abengane — Abengane is a Nen exorcist capable of removing Nen curses. The Troupe searches Greed Island for him after Kurapika seals Chrollo’s abilities. His exorcism eventually enables Chrollo to use Nen again.
Sarasa — Sarasa is Chrollo’s childhood friend and a performer in the Meteor City dubbing group. Her abduction and murder become the immediate cause of his transformation from a creative, gentle child into the future leader of the Phantom Troupe.
Sheila — Sheila participates in the children’s performances and helps search for Sarasa after her disappearance. Her later movements connect Meteor City’s history indirectly with the Kurta Clan.
Story Role
Story Role
Chrollo is initially established through the Phantom Troupe’s reputation before taking command of its Yorknew City operation. He orders the theft of items from the underground auction, only to find the vault already emptied by the Shadow Beasts. The Troupe retaliates against the Mafia and dismantles much of its armed structure.
He reads the members’ fortunes through Lovely Ghostwriter and adjusts the group’s actions around predictions of death and separation. Rather than abandon Yorknew immediately, he uses the prophecies to identify danger, deceive the Mafia, and conduct a massacre in Uvogin’s memory.
The Zoldyck assassins confront Chrollo after being hired by the Ten Dons. He fights Silva and Zeno simultaneously while attempting to survive long enough to study their Nen. The contract ends when the Troupe kills the clients, leaving Chrollo alive.
Kurapika later captures Chrollo and seals his Nen with Judgment Chain. Chrollo is exchanged for Gon and Killua, but the imposed condition prevents him from speaking with the Troupe or using Skill Hunter. The Spider begins searching for a Nen exorcist while its leader travels separately.
After Abengane removes Kurapika’s curse, Chrollo accepts Hisoka’s long-awaited challenge at Heaven’s Arena. He constructs a strategy around Gallery Fake, Order Stamp, Black Voice, Convert Hands, The Sun and Moon, and Double Face, turning spectators into an army of explosive puppets. He wins the battle after explaining enough of the plan to demonstrate his certainty.
Hisoka revives and kills Kortopi and Shalnark, then announces that he will hunt every Spider. Chrollo boards the Black Whale with the remaining Troupe, driven by grief and a determination to kill him. The search unfolds alongside the Kakin succession contest and the struggle among the ship’s criminal families.
Character Development
Character Development
Chrollo’s earliest scenes present a leader who appears to have erased his individual identity in favor of the Spider. He treats his own death as strategically acceptable and speaks of members as limbs that may be replaced. This makes him seem almost impersonal even among mass murderers.
His childhood history reveals that leadership originally emerged from creativity rather than violence. Chrollo united divided children through translation, acting, and shared entertainment. The adult criminal’s command of roles, language, and audience expectation grows from those same abilities.
Sarasa’s murder teaches Chrollo that Meteor City’s invisibility leaves its children vulnerable. His response is deliberately self-destructive: he plans to make himself and his friends into convincing villains so that criminal networks will expose themselves while seeking illicit material and victims.
As the Troupe accumulates victims and enemies, the performed identity becomes a lived reality. The group remains loyal to Meteor City and to one another, but the distinction between playing monsters and becoming them largely disappears. Chrollo’s difficulty explaining why he kills reflects that loss of a clear boundary.
The deaths of Uvogin and Pakunoda expose grief beneath his doctrine of replaceable limbs. Shalnark and Kortopi’s deaths affect him even more visibly, leaving him isolated among his followers and intensely focused on Hisoka. His behavior aboard the Black Whale suggests that the survival of the Spider and his personal need for revenge are no longer easily separable.
Etymology
Etymology
“Chrollo” is rendered phonetically in Japanese as クロロ. Official and licensed translations have used several spellings, including Chrollo, Chrolo, and Kuroro. “Chrollo” is the standard spelling used by modern English releases.
“Lucilfer” is written ルシルフル. Earlier English material has rendered it as Lucilfer, Lucifer, Lusilfer, or Lucilpher. The spelling and the inverted cross imagery suggest an association with Lucifer, though the series does not provide a formal etymological explanation.
The name “Skill Hunter” describes Chrollo’s collection of other people’s abilities. Its written Japanese title, 盗賊の極意, means approximately “the thief’s secret” or “the essence of thievery,” while the furigana supplies the English-derived reading.
“Phantom Troupe” translates the Japanese Gen’ei Ryodan, meaning “Phantom Brigade.” The organization’s spider emblem gives Chrollo the title of its head, and his number 0 identifies him as the central founding member rather than one of the twelve legs.

In Other Media
In Other Media
Chrollo appears in both major television adaptations of Hunter × Hunter. Yoshikazu Nagano voices him in the 1999 series, while Mamoru Miyano performs the role in the 2011 adaptation. Robbie Daymond provides his English voice in the 2011 dub.
The 1999 television anime introduces the Phantom Troupe during Yorknew City, and the subsequent original video animation continues through Chrollo’s capture and exchange. The adaptation expands atmosphere and character interaction while retaining his conflict with Kurapika and the Zoldyck assassins.
The 2011 anime adapts Chrollo’s role through the Yorknew City storyline and briefly follows the Troupe’s search for an exorcist on Greed Island. Material covering his battle with Hisoka and the Black Whale expedition occurs beyond the endpoint of that adaptation.
He appears in the non-canonical film Hunter × Hunter: Phantom Rouge, which uses the Phantom Troupe and Kurapika’s history as central elements. He also appears in franchise games, trading cards, audio productions, stage adaptations, and promotional merchandise.
Chrollo is playable in crossover titles including Jump Force, where Skill Hunter is adapted into a fixed combat moveset rather than allowing unrestricted theft. Hunter × Hunter-specific games likewise emphasize Indoor Fish, the book, and techniques associated with his Yorknew appearances.
Reception
Reception
Chrollo placed fourth in Hunter × Hunter’s second official Weekly Shōnen Jump character popularity poll and eighth in the third. These results kept him among the series’ highest-ranking antagonistic characters despite comparatively limited appearances.
His design, calm delivery, and forehead cross became widely used visual identifiers for the Phantom Troupe. Official merchandise frequently pairs him with Hisoka, Kurapika, or the founding Spiders, reflecting the three major conflicts associated with his character.
The battle between Chrollo and Hisoka drew particular attention for its dense explanation of Nen conditions and its use of several abilities as parts of a single prepared strategy. Rather than presenting power as a simple increase in force, the fight centers on interpretation, sequencing, and control of the environment.
The later Meteor City chapters substantially changed the context surrounding Chrollo’s leadership. They revealed his childhood as a translator and performer, connecting the adult thief’s theatricality and identity questions to the event that produced the Phantom Troupe.
