Personality
Personality
Bug-Eyes is pragmatic, sarcastic, talkative, humorous, and considerably more interested in comfortable living than heroic adventure. He frequently points out the practical problems in other people's grand plans and is not ashamed of admitting fear.
His bluntness can create arguments because he tends to say exactly what he thinks without considering whether the timing is appropriate. Even so, his observations are often sensible, particularly concerning trade and sea travel.
Bug-Eyes avoids discussing painful parts of his past and prefers to believe time will eventually make old wounds irrelevant. This tendency contrasts with Thorfinn and Hild, whose lives are defined by confronting rather than avoiding past trauma.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Bug-Eyes is an excellent sailor, navigator, merchant, and lookout. His unusually sharp eyesight makes him particularly valuable at sea.
Leif teaches him maritime work and commerce after taking him in. Bug-Eyes understands bargaining, cargo, ship operations, and the practical realities of long-distance expeditions.
In Vinland he becomes one of Arnheid Village's most important interpreters after learning the Lnu language through sustained contact with Niskawaji'j. His language ability makes him essential to diplomacy between the settlers and local communities.
Story Role
Story Role
Bug-Eyes is introduced in Jelling while traveling and trading with Leif. A dispute with Olmar leads to Leif meeting Ketil, who mentions that he owns a slave also named Thorfinn. The coincidence finally gives Leif the lead he has pursued for years.
Bug-Eyes accompanies Leif to Ketil's farm and becomes part of the group around the reunited Thorfinn.
He later joins Thorfinn's eastern trading expedition, travels through the Baltic conflict, and continues with the eventual voyage west.
In Vinland, Bug-Eyes learns the local language with Niskawaji'j and becomes the settlement's primary interpreter. Their linguistic partnership develops into a personal relationship, eventually resulting in an engagement.
As relations between the Norse settlers and Lnu deteriorate, Bug-Eyes's ability to communicate across the cultural divide becomes increasingly important to attempts at preventing war.
Relationships
Relationships
Leif Ericson is Bug-Eyes's adoptive father. Leif buys him while mistakenly believing he has located Thors's missing son, then frees and raises him.
Mols becomes Bug-Eyes's adoptive brother through Leif's family.
Thorfinn shares Bug-Eyes's birth name, creating a recurring source of confusion after the two finally meet.
Niskawaji'j learns Norse from Bug-Eyes while teaching him her own language. Their friendship develops into an engagement.
Olmar argues with Bug-Eyes in Jelling, inadvertently leading Leif to the information that reveals Thorfinn's whereabouts.
Gudrid, Einar, and Hild become Bug-Eyes's traveling companions during the later expeditions.
