Betsuhei Jounan

Jounan is confident and proud of the Judo Club. He trusts his own training and regards the club as strong enough to face challenges directly rather than avoiding difficult opponents.

He also displays a lecherous streak. His eagerness to volunteer first against Medaka is motivated partly by the hope that he can disguise inappropriate contact as an accident during their judo match.

His characterization remains relatively brief, with most of his appearances tied to the Judo Club rather than an independent storyline.

Jounan is a trained judoka and one of the more senior practitioners in Hakoniwa Academy's Judo Club. His position as vice-captain and designated successor to Nabeshima establishes him as one of the club's strongest conventional athletes.

His judo is nevertheless operating within normal human martial arts rather than the Abnormal abilities possessed by many later characters.

Against Medaka, the enormous difference in physical talent means that ordinary confidence and training are insufficient to give him a meaningful advantage.

Jounan appears during the Judo Club storyline, when Nabeshima is considering retirement and the future leadership of the club. The club's request brings Medaka and the Student Council into its internal affairs.

He participates when the Judo Club members face Medaka, volunteering to challenge her before his teammates.

Jounan's eventual selection as the club's next captain helps establish that the Judo Club can continue after Nabeshima leaves without requiring Kouki Akune to inherit her position.

Nekomi Nabeshima is Jounan's captain and predecessor. Nekomi Nabeshima chooses Jounan to succeed her as captain rather than placing the responsibility on Akune.

Kouki Akune is the Judo Club's celebrated "Prince of Judo" and a considerably more exceptional martial artist than Jounan.

Medaka Kurokami faces Jounan during the Judo Club's challenge. His confidence does little to bridge the enormous difference between their capabilities.
