Benny

Benny is easygoing, intelligent and considerably less confrontational than Revy or Dutch. He rarely seeks violence and openly acknowledges to Rock that neither of them belongs in the same category of fighter as their armed teammates.

Unlike Rock, however, Benny has largely made peace with the moral compromises required to live in Roanapur. He does not generally challenge Revy and Dutch over the violence involved in Lagoon Company jobs and is more inclined to concentrate on his own responsibilities than to intervene in the ethical decisions of others.

Benny is particularly protective of his computers and takes obvious pride in his technical ability. His confidence is strongest when dealing with machines, encryption and electronic systems, where he can contribute as decisively as Revy does in a gunfight.

Benny is an expert hacker and the Lagoon Company's principal technology specialist. The official anime profile describes his hacking ability as "wizard-class," reflecting his capacity to work with computer systems, communications and electronic information at a level far beyond ordinary technical support.

He also serves as the company's mechanic and researcher. Benny maintains the Black Lagoon's technical systems, assists with vehicles and communications and searches for information needed during jobs. His knowledge allows the company to operate independently rather than constantly relying on outside specialists.

Benny is also a capable driver and handles some of the company's ground transportation. He generally avoids firefights, understanding that his value lies in keeping systems operational and supplying information rather than trying to imitate Revy's combat role.

Benny is already an established member of Lagoon Company when Rock is kidnapped. Having entered Roanapur's criminal world through circumstances outside conventional organized crime, he provides Rock with another example of someone whose old life effectively became inaccessible.

He supports the company's early missions from the Black Lagoon and through its technical systems. During the hunt for the Nazi painting, Benny's Jewish background makes the crew's encounter with neo-Nazis personally distasteful to him even though he remains primarily responsible for technical support.

Benny becomes more personally involved during the counterfeit-money conflict when he meets Greenback Jane, a skilled counterfeiter and computer specialist. Their shared technical interests create an immediate connection in a storyline where Benny's expertise becomes particularly visible.

Benny and Jane subsequently maintain a long-distance relationship through the internet. Her later return to Roanapur brings their relationship into the Lagoon Company's orbit again and gives Benny an ongoing personal connection outside the core crew.

Revy rescued Benny when his trouble with the FBI and mafia placed his life in danger. Although Revy and Benny have very different temperaments, they become established teammates well before Rock joins the company.

Dutch is Benny's employer and captain. Dutch frequently calls him "Benny-Boy" and depends on his technical expertise for the operation of the Black Lagoon and the company's other equipment.

Rokuro Okajima shares Benny's lack of interest in becoming a gunfighter. Benny helps Rokuro Okajima adjust to Lagoon Company life, though Benny is generally less troubled by the crew's criminal methods than Rock.

Greenback Jane meets Benny while fleeing enemies connected to her counterfeiting operation. Benny's computer skills impress Greenback Jane, and the two develop a romantic relationship that continues online after their first adventure together.
