Azuma Higashi

Azuma is intelligent, disciplined, competitive, and strongly motivated by his sense of justice. His father taught him that recognizing injustice without acting against it is cowardice, and Azuma internalizes that lesson deeply. He therefore tends to intervene immediately when someone weaker is threatened, even when violence is required.

His competence also feeds a more troubled side of his personality. Azuma is accustomed to being exceptional and derives part of his identity from being stronger and more capable than Tokio. When that balance begins changing, feelings of inadequacy, jealousy, and frustration emerge beneath his heroic self-image.

Becoming a Choujin forces Azuma to recognize that his idea of justice can become controlling when combined with his need to prove himself. His later maturity comes partly from learning to work beside Tokio rather than defining their friendship through the roles of protector and protected.

Even before awakening as a Choujin, Azuma is an exceptional athlete and martial artist. He excels academically while also having won judo and karate competitions five consecutive times, making him considerably more capable in a fight than an ordinary student.

As the Iron Choujin, Azuma can generate and manipulate iron. Shackles form around his wrists, and he can reshape their metal into weapons, chains, armor, shields, traps, and increasingly complicated mechanical constructions. Creating sophisticated objects requires him to understand their structure and operation; after sufficient study, his creations can include functional devices rather than simple blades.

Azuma's Purge state covers his head with cloth and greatly increases his physical performance. With training, his iron manipulation becomes extraordinarily versatile, allowing him to produce firearms, vehicles, defensive structures, and elaborate weapons suited to specific opponents.

Azuma begins as the apparently exceptional half of his friendship with Tokio. When the two are attacked by Choujin, Azuma proposes using the drug carried by their enemies so they can transform and fight back. Tokio immediately changes while Azuma appears unaffected.

The reversal unsettles him. Tokio begins entering a world in which Azuma cannot automatically guide or protect him, while Azuma increasingly struggles with feelings he does not want to acknowledge.

Azuma eventually awakens as a Choujin after suffering a fatal injury. His unstable awakening and jealousy toward Tokio push him into Chaos, leading to a brutal fight between the childhood friends. Tokio ultimately defeats him, and their reconciliation requires Azuma to admit how deeply their changing relationship had affected him.

After joining Yamato Mori, Azuma develops into one of its most capable young Keepers. His analytical intelligence combines naturally with iron creation: the more thoroughly he understands a structure, the more complex the objects he can reproduce through his power.

Tokio Kurohara is Azuma's childhood friend. Azuma protects Tokio Kurohara from bullies and encourages him when others ridicule him, becoming the person Tokio most admires. Their unequal dynamic eventually produces resentment on both sides, and their fight after Azuma's awakening exposes feelings that neither had previously confronted.

Ely Otta becomes Azuma's friend and fellow Choujin through Yamato Mori. Ely Otta's direct personality often contrasts with Azuma's more controlled demeanor, but the three young Choujin increasingly operate as a team.

Ichiiro Sato participates in Azuma's development as a Keeper and helps train the young Choujin for increasingly dangerous operations.

Maiko Momoma is one of Azuma's fellow Keepers at Yamato Mori. Her straightforward courage and commitment to protecting people place her alongside him during major missions.

Simon Kagomura is another young Keeper who trains and fights alongside Azuma within Yamato Mori.

Touji Higashi is the father whose teachings shape Azuma's understanding of justice from childhood. Azuma's desire to live according to those ideals becomes increasingly complicated as he learns that possessing power and believing oneself righteous do not automatically make every decision just.
