Mai Kujaku

Mai initially presents herself as self-reliant, aloof and motivated by personal gain. Years of depending primarily on herself have convinced her that friendship creates vulnerabilities, so she keeps other duelists at a distance and treats tournaments as competitions rather than social experiences.

Her confidence can make her provocative and openly competitive, particularly around Jonouchi. She enjoys teasing him and rarely misses an opportunity to challenge his pride, yet she also recognizes his determination and develops considerable respect for him.

Beneath that independence, Mai is deeply affected by genuine loyalty. Yugi's group repeatedly helps her without demanding anything in return, gradually breaking down her assumption that relationships are transactional. She becomes fiercely protective of people she accepts as friends.

Mai is an accomplished Duel Monsters player whose best-known cards are the Harpie monsters. Harpie Lady forms the foundation of her early Deck, supported by cards such as Harpie's Pet Dragon and Elegant Egotist that allow her to rapidly increase the strength and number of monsters on her field.

Her apparent psychic ability during Duelist Kingdom is actually a calculated trick. Mai applies different perfumes to her cards, allowing her to identify them by scent without looking. The technique gives opponents the impression that she possesses supernatural card-reading powers and demonstrates her skill at psychological manipulation.

By Battle City, Mai supplements her Harpie strategy with Amazoness monsters. She is consistently portrayed as a serious tournament-level duelist, reaching the semifinals of Duelist Kingdom and qualifying for the Battle City finals.

Mai enters Duelist Kingdom as an experienced competitor who initially has little interest in Yugi's friendship group. Her early interactions with Jonouchi are antagonistic, but their duel becomes an important step in changing how she views both him and competition.

After reaching the tournament's final stages, Mai increasingly becomes an ally rather than merely another competitor. She later enters Battle City and earns a place among the finalists aboard Kaiba's airship.

Her Battle City experiences expose her to the supernatural dangers surrounding the Egyptian God Cards and the Millennium Items. The anime later develops Mai beyond her manga storyline, exploring the psychological consequences of those experiences and her difficulty reconciling her independence with her attachment to the friends she has made.

Katsuya Jonouchi develops one of Mai's strongest relationships. Their interactions combine rivalry, teasing and genuine concern, with Katsuya Jonouchi's persistence gradually earning her respect.

Yugi Mutou becomes a trusted friend after Mai initially approaches him primarily as another powerful tournament competitor. Yugi Mutou's generosity helps challenge Mai's cynical assumptions about friendship.

Anzu Mazaki becomes one of Mai's female friends within the group and consistently supports her during dangerous situations.

Pegasus J. Crawford hosts the Duelist Kingdom tournament in which Mai establishes herself as one of its strongest competitors.
