Alexander Anderson

Anderson is fanatically religious, fearless, combative, and utterly convinced that his violence can be justified as service to God. He treats vampires and other supernatural beings as abominations to be destroyed, while Protestant Hellsing agents can become acceptable targets when institutional conflict places them against the Vatican.

His personality changes dramatically outside combat. Anderson works with children and can display genuine patience, affection, and paternal concern. Younger Iscariot operatives regard him not merely as a superior but as a teacher and father figure, complicating the image of him as nothing more than a religious zealot. Heinkel Wulf, Yumiko Takagi, and Enrico Maxwell are among those strongly influenced by him.

Anderson loves battle almost as much as Alucard does. Their encounters develop beyond institutional hostility into a deeply personal contest in which each recognizes the other as unusually difficult to kill. Anderson sees destroying Alucard as the ultimate expression of his vocation, while Alucard sees Anderson as a rare human worthy of serious respect.

His religious commitment does not make him blindly obedient to every church authority. Anderson's faith is directed toward God before bureaucracy, and his moral judgment can diverge sharply from the ambitions of superiors who treat faith as political justification.

Anderson is a Regenerator, the result of Vatican biotechnology designed to create a human capable of fighting monsters without becoming one. His enhanced body possesses superhuman strength, speed, endurance, reactions, and extraordinary regenerative capability. Serious gunshot wounds can close rapidly, allowing him to continue fighting after injuries that would kill an ordinary human.

His primary weapons are large numbers of blessed bayonets. Anderson uses them as swords in close combat and as thrown weapons at range. Their sacred properties make them particularly dangerous against vampires and can interfere with supernatural regeneration. His supply appears effectively inexhaustible during combat.

Anderson also uses pages of scripture as supernatural tools. These can obstruct movement, interfere with supernatural effects, create barriers, and support sudden repositioning. He frequently surrounds a target with pages before attacking, blending Catholic imagery with an aggressively mobile fighting style.

His regeneration is powerful enough that Hellsing develops the Jackal specifically with Regenerators like Anderson in mind. The weapon's larger rounds can inflict damage his ordinary healing has difficulty immediately overcoming.

Anderson eventually implants the Holy Nail of Helena into himself. The relic transforms his body into a mass of sacred thorns, dramatically amplifies his regeneration and physical abilities, and produces holy fire capable of burning supernatural entities and Alucard's familiars. The transformation also costs Anderson the human state Alucard had respected.

Anderson first encounters Hellsing operatives during a mission involving Northern Ireland. His confrontation with Alucard immediately demonstrates that Iscariot possesses an anti-vampire combatant capable of matching Hellsing's own trump card for at least limited periods.

Their rivalry continues whenever Vatican and Hellsing operations overlap. Anderson's ability to regenerate from Alucard's gunfire transforms what might otherwise be another effortless victory into a battle Alucard genuinely enjoys.

As Millennium becomes the larger threat, the relationship among Hellsing, Iscariot, and the Nazi vampire organization becomes more complicated. Anderson remains committed to destroying monsters but operates within an institution increasingly willing to treat the conflict as a holy war against religious and political enemies alike.

When Millennium attacks London, Maxwell arrives with the Vatican's Ninth Crusade. Anderson initially fights as part of the Catholic force, but the behavior of its leadership pushes him into conflict with how the crusade is being conducted.

After Maxwell becomes intoxicated with political and religious power, Anderson rejects his former student's conduct. Maxwell's authority and ambition have grown into something Anderson no longer recognizes as genuine service to God.

Alucard's Level Zero release creates the opportunity Anderson has wanted: the vampire's accumulated familiars are outside his body, leaving his core more directly exposed. Anderson fights through the released army to confront him.

Believing his normal humanity insufficient to finish the battle, Anderson drives Helena's Nail into his own heart. The relic transforms him into a supernatural thorn-covered being. Alucard reacts with anger rather than fear, condemning Anderson for becoming a monster instead of remaining the human opponent he wanted to face.

The transformed Anderson nearly destroys Alucard with sacred fire, but Seras interrupts the finishing attack. Alucard eventually reaches Anderson's chest, removes the Nail with his heart, and crushes it, ending their rivalry.

Alucard is Anderson's defining rival. Alucard represents the monstrous enemy Anderson has spent his life preparing to destroy, yet their mutual excitement in battle produces an unusual respect beneath their hatred.

Enrico Maxwell is Anderson's superior within Iscariot and also someone he helped raise. Anderson's relationship with Enrico Maxwell therefore combines institutional obedience with paternal responsibility. When Maxwell's ambition overtakes the values Anderson believes a priest should uphold, Anderson no longer treats his authority as absolute.

Heinkel Wulf is one of the younger Iscariot operatives raised and trained under Anderson. Heinkel Wulf regards him as a father figure and continues carrying his influence into later combat.

Yumiko Takagi is another Iscariot operative who grows up under Anderson's care. Yumiko Takagi admires him intensely, and his role in her upbringing makes his loss personally devastating to her.

Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing is the leader of the Protestant organization Anderson repeatedly opposes. Although their institutions are hostile, Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing is powerful enough within her own hierarchy that Anderson treats her as more than an incidental civilian.
