Akira Kurono

Akira is intelligent, reserved and initially cold toward his older brother. Their parents' favoritism helps create a family dynamic in which the brothers grow apart rather than relying on one another.

He appears socially and academically successful, reinforcing Kei's belief that Akira has everything he does not. Despite their poor relationship, Akira's later behavior shows that his indifference toward his brother is not absolute.

When he learns that the Vampires intend to kill Kei, Akira risks betraying them to warn his brother and explain their weakness.

Akira initially appears to be an ordinary student. The physical changes and headaches he experiences are symptoms of becoming a Vampire through nanomachines within his body.

As a Vampire, Akira possesses enhanced strength, speed and reflexes. He becomes capable enough to defeat another Vampire in close combat and understands the group's vulnerabilities, including their need to consume blood and their sensitivity to certain conditions.

He does not use a Gantz suit or become a conventional Gantz hunter.

Akira first appears through Kei's memories and later as a student whose apparently successful life contrasts with his brother's alienation from their family.

His strange physical symptoms gradually draw him into the Vampire storyline. Akira becomes one of the Vampires and learns that their organization is actively hunting Gantz participants.

Despite his estrangement from Kei, Akira secretly warns him about the planned attack. Hikawa discovers the betrayal and kills Akira, turning his attempt to protect his brother into his final act.

Kei Kurono is Akira's older brother. The two grow up distant because of their family's favoritism, but Akira eventually risks his position among the Vampires to warn Kei that they intend to kill him.

Kenichi Kurono and Yoko Kurono are Akira's parents and openly favor him over his older brother.

Hikawa is a leading Vampire whose interests eventually conflict with Akira's decision to protect his brother. Hikawa kills Akira after discovering his betrayal.

Chiaki encounters Akira at the Vampire club, where he attempts to help her escape after realizing what is about to happen to the visiting girls.
