Aki Hayakawa

Aki grows up in Hokkaido with his parents and younger brother, Taiyo Hayakawa. Taiyo is physically frail enough that their parents devote considerable attention to his health, leaving the young Aki frustrated when he wants someone to play with him. Despite that resentment, the brothers are close, and Aki ultimately goes outside with Taiyo to play in the snow.

The Gun Devil's attack destroys that life almost instantly. Aki watches his family home disappear while he is outside, leaving him as the only surviving member of the household. The experience gives him the objective that controls much of his early adulthood: finding and killing the Gun Devil regardless of the cost to himself.

He eventually joins Public Safety Devil Hunters and is paired with Himeno, an experienced hunter who has already lost several partners. Himeno quickly notices that Aki differs from hunters who have survived by becoming emotionally detached. He mourns colleagues who die, becomes attached to partners and retains enough ordinary sensitivity that each loss hurts him.

By the time Denji enters Public Safety, Aki has already accumulated several years of field experience and contracts with multiple devils. He works under Makima and takes his duties seriously enough to resent anyone who seems to treat Devil Hunting as an easy source of money, excitement or personal gratification.

That attitude explains his initial treatment of Denji. When he learns that Denji's motives involve food, women and basic comfort rather than revenge or public duty, Aki attempts to discourage him from remaining in Public Safety. Their conflict only worsens when Makima orders Denji to live in Aki's apartment.

Power later joins the same household. Aki's initially orderly home becomes filled with two people who ignore his standards of cleanliness, steal food and create constant disruption. The arrangement nevertheless becomes increasingly important to all three as Public Safety missions continue.

Aki presents himself as serious, restrained and professional. He speaks bluntly, dislikes unnecessary risk and often appears irritated by Denji and Power's lack of discipline. His controlled demeanor makes him seem much older emotionally than the younger hunters assigned around him.

He is nevertheless unusually softhearted for his profession. Himeno specifically recognizes that Aki still cries when colleagues die, regarding this as evidence that he has not become numb enough to survive Devil Hunting comfortably. Aki attempts to hide this sensitivity because emotional attachment is dangerous in an occupation where partners frequently die.

Revenge initially overrides many other priorities. Aki is prepared to sacrifice portions of his lifespan and enter contracts with dangerous devils if doing so increases his chances of reaching the Gun Devil. This willingness can appear self-destructive, especially to people who have become attached to him.

His feelings toward devils and Fiends are initially uncompromising. Aki tells Denji that Devil Hunters use whatever tools are available but should never mistake devils for friends. Power's presence in his home gradually complicates that view because daily experience forces him to relate to a Fiend as an individual rather than simply a category.

Aki is also highly domestic. He cooks, cleans, maintains routines and expects shared spaces to be treated responsibly. These mundane habits become increasingly significant because Denji and Power have little experience with stable family life, while Aki himself has spent years defining his future almost entirely around revenge.

His emotional development becomes most visible in what he starts wanting for other people. The hunter who begins by treating Denji as an irresponsible nuisance gradually worries about whether Denji and Power will survive missions, eat properly and have futures extending beyond Public Safety.

Aki is a tall young man standing 182 cm. Height displays associated with the official Chainsaw Man anime exhibition list him at that measurement. He has a lean build suited to ordinary human combat rather than the exaggerated musculature of a transformed hybrid.

His hair is black and medium-length, usually gathered into a distinctive topknot. Long bangs frame his face, while his hair falls closer to shoulder length when untied. Power eventually uses the hairstyle as the basis for calling him "Topknot."

Aki has blue eyes and normally wears the standardized Public Safety Devil Hunter uniform: a white dress shirt, black tie and dark suit. Compared with Denji's untidy appearance and Power's altered version of the uniform, Aki generally keeps his clothing neat.

He wears small black earrings and carries a sword across his back during much of his early career. The sword is tied directly to one of his devil contracts rather than functioning as an ordinary katana.

His overall design emphasizes restraint. Dark formal clothing, controlled expressions and the practical topknot visually separate him from the more visibly supernatural Denji and Power even though all three eventually operate as a team.

Aki is an ordinary human rather than a hybrid or Fiend, so his survival depends on training, devil contracts and judgment. He cannot regenerate simply by drinking blood and must weigh the physical or metaphysical price of every supernatural ability he uses.

He possesses strong conventional combat skills. Aki can fight effectively with swords, move quickly enough to engage devils at close range and remain composed under supernatural pressure. His practical experience also makes him useful as a field leader when younger hunters panic or behave impulsively.

His first prominent contract is with the Fox Devil. By forming a specific hand sign and calling "Kon," Aki can summon the Fox Devil's head to bite or swallow a target. The ability is extremely powerful against many ordinary devils, though the Fox Devil retains enough independence to refuse cooperation when displeased.

Aki also possesses a contract with the Curse Devil, accessed through a nail-shaped sword. Each successful strike contributes to a required sequence, after which the Curse Devil manifests and inflicts a lethal curse on the target. The price is severe: using the contract consumes years of Aki's remaining lifespan.

The Katana Man incident demonstrates why this cost matters. Aki is willing to use the Curse Devil even when the enemy's unusual physiology makes killing him difficult, showing how readily revenge and duty can override concern for his own future.

After losing access to the Fox Devil's cooperation, Aki obtains a contract with the Future Devil. Unlike the heavy lifespan cost associated with Curse, the Future Devil demands the right to live inside Aki's right eye after finding his eventual future unusually entertaining.

The contract allows Aki to glimpse a short distance into the future during combat. This does not automatically make him faster than an opponent, but it gives him advance knowledge of attacks and lets a trained swordsman position himself accordingly.

Aki's abilities therefore differ fundamentally from Denji's. Denji wins many battles by accepting catastrophic damage and regenerating; Aki must prevent lethal hits from happening at all. Future sight, disciplined movement and careful contract use reflect a fighting style built around the vulnerability of an ordinary human body.

Fox Devil: Kon summons the Fox Devil's enormous head by forming a hand gesture and speaking the command "Kon." The summoned head bites or swallows the designated target, allowing Aki to eliminate many devils without approaching them directly.

Curse Devil Contract uses Aki's nail-shaped sword to mark a target through repeated strikes. After the required sequence is completed, the Curse Devil manifests and crushes or curses the victim. Each use costs Aki part of his lifespan.

Future Sight comes from Aki's contract with the Future Devil. By allowing the devil to reside in his right eye, Aki can see several seconds into the future and react to attacks before they occur.

Swordsmanship remains a crucial non-contract ability. Aki uses conventional blades alongside supernatural contracts, relying on timing and precision rather than raw physical power.

Devil Contract Strategy is not a named technique but defines Aki's combat method. He selects between supernatural tools according to the target, reserving costly contracts for opponents ordinary weapons cannot handle.

Denji begins as someone Aki considers completely unsuited to Devil Hunting. Aki Hayakawa dislikes Denji's shallow motives, rough behavior and willingness to treat dangerous situations casually, while Denji resents Aki's superiority and attacks him physically during their first confrontation. Forced cohabitation gradually changes both men. Aki becomes the person who cooks for Denji, establishes rules for him and repeatedly fights beside him. By the later Public Safety Saga, Aki's priorities have shifted so far that he asks Makima to protect Denji and Power even if abandoning the Gun Devil mission is necessary. His relationship with Denji has effectively become familial.

Power initially represents everything Aki dislikes about devils and Fiends. Power is messy, dishonest and disruptive, and her arrival turns Aki's apartment into an even less orderly home. Continued cohabitation makes their relationship increasingly sibling-like despite Aki rarely expressing affection directly. Aki eventually places Power's safety alongside Denji's when deciding that preserving their lives matters more to him than fulfilling his original revenge.

Himeno is Aki's senior partner and one of the most important people in his early Public Safety career. Himeno becomes attached to him after losing several previous partners and repeatedly urges him to value his own life instead of spending it on revenge. She smokes partly because of their relationship and recognizes the emotional sensitivity Aki tries to hide. Himeno sacrifices herself during the Katana Man attack in an attempt to save Aki, leaving the Ghost Devil to fight after her body disappears. Her death affects Aki deeply and further erodes his ability to treat Devil Hunting as a purely personal revenge mission.

Makima is Aki's superior and the object of unusually strong admiration on his part. Aki Hayakawa trusts Makima, works under her instructions and rarely questions why his emotional attachment to her feels so intense. Later revelations imply that Makima's influence over him is connected to her nature as the Control Devil, making his apparent romantic devotion much less straightforward than he understands.

Kishibe is a veteran Public Safety hunter who trains Aki and previously worked closely with Himeno. Kishibe possesses far more experience than the younger hunters and understands both the value and danger of becoming emotionally detached in their profession.

Angel Devil eventually becomes Aki's assigned partner after the restructuring of Public Safety. Angel Devil initially appears apathetic toward human life and is dangerous to touch because physical contact drains lifespan. Aki nevertheless saves him during a dangerous operation rather than abandoning him, helping create an unusual partnership between a human obsessed with killing devils and a devil reluctant to kill humans.

Future Devil contracts with Aki after taking an unusual interest in his future. Future Devil normally charges substantial prices for contracts, but demands only residence in Aki's eye because he finds the future awaiting Aki particularly entertaining. The reason for that enthusiasm becomes clear much later when the Future Devil's prediction concerning Aki's death is fulfilled.

Fox Devil is one of Aki's earliest contracted devils. Fox Devil responds to the command "Kon" and allows Aki to summon portions of its body in exchange for payment such as parts of his skin. The devil retains personal preferences and can withdraw cooperation after being made to consume something it finds unacceptable.

Curse Devil grants Aki one of his most lethal early abilities. Curse Devil's power comes with an exceptionally high personal cost, consuming years of Aki's remaining life whenever the full technique is used.

Katana Man becomes one of Aki's principal enemies during the attack on Public Safety. Aki initially manages to activate the Curse Devil against Katana Man, only to discover that the enemy possesses a hybrid-like regenerative ability that prevents the apparent killing blow from ending the fight permanently.

Akane Sawatari participates in the same attack and supports Katana Man with the Snake Devil. Akane Sawatari's intervention helps overturn Aki's apparent victory and exposes how vulnerable even an experienced human hunter remains when several powerful supernatural contracts are used against him.

Reze intersects with Aki indirectly through Denji and Public Safety during the Bomb Girl incident. Aki Hayakawa becomes involved in the response once Reze's danger to Denji and civilians becomes clear, placing his disciplined approach to Devil Hunting against another weapon hybrid capable of recovering from seemingly fatal damage.

[Gun Devil is the enemy around which Aki constructs much of his life. The Gun Devil destroys Aki's family in childhood, leading him to join Public Safety and accept contracts that shorten his life. The relationship ultimately becomes cruelly inverted when Aki's body is turned into the Gun Fiend and used against Denji.](#spoiler)

Aki enters the story as the first experienced Devil Hunter assigned directly around Denji. His hostility establishes that Public Safety contains people who do not share Makima's willingness to indulge Denji's behavior and who understand far better how frequently Devil Hunters die.

The Bat Devil and Eternity Devil missions gradually force him to acknowledge that Denji's bizarre methods can be effective. Aki still dislikes his motives, but he begins treating Denji as someone whose survival matters rather than merely a dangerous subordinate who should resign.

Power's addition turns their shared apartment into one of the series' central domestic settings. Aki becomes the responsible adult presence within a household containing two supernatural young people with little understanding of ordinary routines.

The Eternity Devil incident also exposes Aki's willingness to sacrifice himself for other hunters. When Kobeni and others consider killing Denji to escape the hotel, Aki protects him despite having spent considerable time arguing that Denji is irresponsible.

The Katana Man attack changes Aki's position substantially. Himeno sacrifices herself while trying to protect him, and Aki loses several colleagues during the coordinated assault. Public Safety subsequently reorganizes surviving personnel under Special Division 4.

Training and new contracts follow. Aki obtains the Future Devil's power, giving him a more sophisticated defensive tool while emphasizing that his future itself has become an object of supernatural interest.

The Reze Arc places him again within Denji's increasingly complicated life outside ordinary Devil Hunting. While Denji becomes emotionally entangled with Reze, Aki remains part of the Public Safety response once the Bomb Devil hybrid begins attacking openly. The 2025 film currently marks the widely adapted boundary for this material. The official portal confirms Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc as the continuation of the television adaptation.

The International Assassins arc pushes Aki into conflicts far beyond ordinary domestic Devil Hunting. He and Angel become involved in battles with foreign assassins pursuing Denji, and their experiences in Hell further expose how helpless even trained Public Safety hunters can become against primal fears.

Aki's priorities change decisively before the Gun Devil operation. After consulting the Future Devil and recognizing how dangerous the coming conflict will be, he abandons the revenge that has defined his career and asks Makima to ensure Denji and Power survive instead.

The Gun Devil ultimately attacks Japan under circumstances involving Makima. Aki is killed during the confrontation, and the Gun Devil later possesses his corpse, producing the Gun Fiend. Denji is forced to fight him while Aki's remaining consciousness experiences the battle as an innocent snowball fight between friends.

Aki initially believes revenge gives his life sufficient direction. Killing the Gun Devil appears to justify every contract, every lost year of lifespan and every dangerous Public Safety assignment. He judges Denji harshly partly because Denji's trivial ambitions seem insulting beside that seriousness.

Living with Denji and Power gradually undermines this certainty. Aki does not experience a single dramatic conversion; instead, routines accumulate. He cooks their food, cleans after them, waits for them to return from assignments and reacts when they are hurt.

Himeno's concern also becomes more understandable with time. She repeatedly warns that Aki's revenge could kill him before he reaches the Gun Devil. Aki initially accepts that possibility because dying while pursuing revenge seems preferable to abandoning the goal.

Her loss changes the emotional cost of continuing. After Himeno's death, Aki is forced to experience exactly what she feared for him: another person dying because Public Safety's violence consumes everyone around them. His private grief exposes how little emotional distance he has ever truly developed.

Angel further complicates his old division between humans and devils. Aki begins by insisting that devils are tools or enemies, but eventually risks himself to save a devil who has become his partner. The act parallels his growing acceptance of Power at home.

The decisive transformation occurs when Aki realizes he wants Denji and Power to live more than he wants revenge. He is finally willing to give up the Gun Devil mission—the purpose around which he organized most of his adult life—if doing so can keep them safe.

That decision arrives too late to protect him from the larger forces surrounding Makima and the Gun Devil. His final arc is therefore defined not by completing revenge but by rejecting it, only to become the instrument through which the violence he hated reaches the family he chose.

Aki's surname Hayakawa is written 早川 in Japanese. The characters commonly mean "early/fast" and "river," producing the ordinary Japanese surname Hayakawa.

His given name Aki is written アキ in katakana rather than assigned canonical kanji in the manga. This means there is no official kanji-derived meaning that can safely be treated as definitive.

The simplicity of "Aki" contrasts with the overtly conceptual names given to entities such as Power or Angel Devil. He is introduced and treated primarily as an ordinary human inside a setting increasingly populated by supernatural beings.

His alias Topknot derives directly from his hairstyle. Power uses the physical feature as a dismissive nickname rather than as an official Devil Hunter codename.

His fights are animated differently from Denji's deliberately chaotic chainsaw battles. Aki's movements are economical, contract activation is precise and the danger comes partly from knowing that an ordinary human body cannot absorb the punishment Denji survives.

Aki returns in Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, released theatrically in Japan on September 19, 2025. The official film site confirms the release date and positions the movie as the continuation of the television series.

The film adapts the Bomb Girl/Reze storyline, retaining Aki as part of Denji's Public Safety life while the central narrative concentrates increasingly on Denji and Reze. His presence is especially important because the apartment shared with Denji and Power remains the stable domestic counterpoint to Denji's attraction toward an apparently different life.

A further anime project, Chainsaw Man – Assassins Arc, has officially been announced. The current official portal lists it as the next anime adaptation after the Reze film. This means the International Assassins material and Aki's subsequent manga developments remain beyond the most recently released adaptation as of August 2026.

Aki also appears prominently in franchise merchandise, collaboration campaigns and figures. Official promotional campaigns frequently group him with Denji, Power and Makima as one of the central faces of the Public Safety cast. The GiGO collaboration, for example, used the principal anime cast across character goods and acrylic merchandise.

Aki has consistently ranked among the most popular Chainsaw Man characters. In VIZ's 2020 English-language poll he placed fourth behind Denji, Power and Makima, while the Japanese results reproduced by VIZ ranked him third behind Power and Makima.

His popularity strengthened further in the 2022 VIZ poll, where Aki placed third behind Power and Denji. He ranked ahead of Kobeni's car, Kobeni, Makima, Reze, Beam, Pochita and Angel Devil.

The character's appeal is closely tied to the contrast he provides within Denji's household. Denji is driven by appetites he was never allowed to satisfy, Power ignores most human social rules, and Aki initially represents order, discipline and conventional adulthood. Their shared apartment gradually turns those contrasting personalities into a recognizable domestic unit.

His combat style contributes to that contrast. Denji can recover from dismemberment, while Aki must pay permanent costs for supernatural power and can die from injuries that would merely interrupt a hybrid. Contracts with the Curse and Future Devils therefore carry tension even before their long-term consequences are known.

The anime expanded attention around his quieter characterization through extended domestic scenes and restrained direction. Rather than limiting him to the archetype of the stern senior partner, the adaptation spends time on cooking, cleaning, smoking and morning routines that establish the life Denji and Power gradually enter.

For manga readers, Aki's later storyline dramatically changes the significance of those domestic scenes. The man introduced as someone willing to sacrifice his life for revenge eventually values the improvised family in his apartment enough to abandon that revenge, making his transformation into the Gun Fiend and Denji's forced confrontation with him one of the Public Safety Saga's most consequential tragedies.
