Trigun

Much of the damage attributed to "Vash" is caused by the activities of bounty hunters who are after the 60,000,000,000$$ (sixty billion "double dollars") reward on Vash's head for the destruction of a city called July. Vash does not clearly remember the destruction of July, and only wants "love and peace", as he puts it; though he is a gunfighter of inhuman skill, he uses his weapons only to save lives wherever he can. As the series progresses, more is gradually learned about Vash's mysterious history and the history of the human civilization on Gunsmoke, the desert planet the series is set on. The series is often humorous in tone, but at the same time it involves very serious character development and especially in later episodes it becomes quite emotionally intense. Vash is occasionally joined by a priest, Nicholas D. Wolfwood, who is almost as good a gunfighter as Vash himself, and later is targeted by a band of assassins known as the Gung-Ho Guns for reasons which are mysterious at first. Trigun evolves into a very serious discussion of the nature of morality, posing questions such as: What is the nature of morality? Can we judge different moral codes? If a person is forced to betray their moral code, does that betrayal invalidate that moral code, and can the person still try to live up to that moral code? Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners takes the sprawling video-game world of Night City and does something the games rarely have time to — it makes it hurt. Studio Trigger's ten-episode run follows David Martinez, a street kid who loses everything and claws his way into the life of an edgerunner: a mercenary who trades pieces of his own body for chrome, speed, and a shot at mattering in a city that eats people like him for breakfast. Berserk

Berserk is the towering dark-fantasy epic that half of modern manga is quietly built on. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Demon Slayer is a story about exactly what its title promises: killing demons, and the price of doing it with your humanity intact. My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia asks a simple question in a world full of superpowers: what does it take to become a hero? Vagabond

Vinland Saga

Vinland Saga opens as a Viking revenge epic and becomes something far greater. Thorfinn is a boy who watches his father — a legendary warrior who wanted only to live in peace — killed before his eyes, and he grows up among the very mercenaries responsible, living for the day he can avenge him. But this is a story about what comes after revenge, and whether a man raised on violence can imagine a life beyond it. "I have no enemies," his father says early on. It takes the whole saga to understand him. Makoto Yukimura roots it in real history — the Danish conquest of England, the brutal politics of the age — and pairs meticulous research with staggering action and hard-won philosophy. The turn from bloody war story to something quieter and braver is one of manga's most rewarding long games. The manga is the complete vision; the anime's two seasons adapt its opening arcs beautifully and make an ideal entry point. Come for the Viking warfare — stay for one of the most thoughtful meditations on violence and redemption the medium has produced.

Dandadan

Dandadan is what you get when aliens and ghosts crash into the same story and neither backs down. High schooler Momo believes in ghosts but not aliens; her classmate Okarun believes in aliens but not ghosts. To settle the argument they each visit a haunted site — and both are spectacularly proven right, with Momo awakening psychic powers and Okarun getting possessed by a cursed spirit. Now they're stuck chasing UFOs and vengeful yokai together while nursing a very awkward crush. Yukinobu Tatsu draws it at a full sprint, with some of the most kinetic, imaginative art in current manga and a tone that flips from genuine horror to gross-out comedy to sweet teenage romance without missing a beat. It's chaotic on purpose, and that chaos is the point — you never know whether the next page brings a monster, a joke, or a heartfelt confession. The manga is ongoing and the anime adaptation brings its manic energy roaring to life. If you want something loud, weird, funny, and secretly tender all at once, Dandadan is one of the freshest series around.
