Jet Black

Jet is responsible, patient, pragmatic, and comparatively conventional. Sunrise calls him the most sensible member of the Bebop crew, a description reflected in the amount of time he spends cleaning up problems caused by Spike, Faye, and Ed.

His patience has limits. Jet can become angry when a partner ignores obvious danger, wastes money, or refuses to explain information relevant to a job. Spike's tendency to disappear into personal conflicts is particularly frustrating because Jet recognizes when a bounty has stopped being about money.

Jet retains the habits of a police investigator. He prefers gathering information before acting, maintains contacts throughout law enforcement, and approaches criminals through evidence and procedure more readily than Spike does. Even after leaving the ISSP, he never fully abandons the values that attracted him to the profession.

Outside work, he cooks, cares for bonsai, studies practical subjects, and maintains the Bebop itself. These domestic interests reinforce his position as the person who turns an old ship into something resembling a home.

His nickname "Black Dog" reflects his tenacity: once Jet commits himself to pursuing a target, he has difficulty letting go. That same persistence can become emotionally unhealthy when a case reconnects him with the unresolved parts of his past.

Jet is an experienced investigator whose years in the ISSP give him expertise in surveillance, interrogation, police databases, criminal networks, and evidence gathering. He often handles the research behind the Bebop's bounties before Spike moves into direct confrontation.

He is physically powerful and capable of close-range fighting despite being less acrobatic than Spike. His larger frame favors direct restraint, grappling, and force, while his police experience makes him comfortable confronting armed suspects.

Jet's cybernetic left arm replaces the arm lost during his ISSP career. The prosthetic is durable and fully functional, becoming one of the most recognizable aspects of his appearance. Netflix's official franchise guide also identifies the mechanical arm as a consequence of the betrayal that ended his police career.

He pilots the Hammerhead, a converted fishing craft equipped with a large grappling arm capable of capturing or manipulating other vessels. Sunrise describes it as a modified fishing catcher boat used to seize bounty targets' ships.

Jet is also the Bebop's primary mechanic and caretaker. The ship itself began as an old fishing vessel from Ganymede before Jet purchased and converted it for interplanetary travel.

Jet begins the series as Spike's established partner, already owning the Bebop and treating bounty hunting as a profession rather than an adventure. His investigative work provides structure for the pair's jobs, while Spike usually handles the most dangerous confrontations.

The arrival of Faye, Ed, and Ein steadily expands Jet's responsibilities. Although he regularly complains that they consume food, damage equipment, disappear without explanation, and contribute little money, he rarely succeeds in excluding them for long. Sunrise's official synopsis explicitly frames the series around the strange shared life of four bounty hunters and one dog aboard his ship.

Several cases force Jet to revisit the life he abandoned on Ganymede. His former police contacts, an old romantic relationship, and unresolved questions surrounding his injury challenge the belief that he cleanly left his former identity behind.

Jet originally believes criminal Udai Taxim was responsible for the ambush in which he lost his arm. During "Black Dog Serenade," he discovers that his former partner Fad secretly betrayed him and deliberately led him into the trap. Prime Video's episode description explicitly centers the revelation that Jet learns how and why his former partner betrayed him.

That discovery explains why Jet left the ISSP despite still valuing the idea of justice. Institutional corruption and personal betrayal destroyed his confidence that remaining inside the force would allow him to live according to those principles.

Spike Spiegel is Jet's bounty-hunting partner and closest companion aboard the Bebop. Spike Spiegel's irresponsibility constantly tests Jet's patience, but Jet understands him well enough to recognize when a job has become personal and repeatedly gives him help even after warning him not to expect it. Sunrise explicitly identifies them as partners.

Faye Valentine joins the Bebop despite Jet's initial objections. Faye Valentine's gambling, debts, disappearing acts, and opportunism frustrate him, but Jet increasingly treats her as part of the household rather than a temporary passenger.

Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV contributes hacking and information retrieval to investigations Jet cannot solve through police contacts alone. Jet becomes accustomed to Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV's strange behavior even if he rarely understands it.

Ein becomes another permanent passenger despite beginning as a bounty-related animal. Jet is generally more accepting of Ein than Spike and incorporates him into everyday life aboard the ship.

Fad is Jet's former ISSP partner and the person responsible for the betrayal that cost him his arm. Fad later reconnects with Jet during the Udai Taxim case, allowing Jet to discover that the incident he had blamed on a criminal was actually arranged from inside the police.

Alisa is Jet's former romantic partner on Ganymede. Their relationship ended because Jet's protective, controlling certainty about their shared future left her feeling unable to make her own choices. Meeting her again forces him to accept that persistence is not always the same as loyalty.

Udai Taxim is the criminal Jet associates with the incident that ended his police career. The later confrontation reveals that Udai knew about Fad's betrayal and exposes the version of the past Jet had misunderstood for years.
