Zazie the Beast

The 1998 Zazie is cold, contemptuous and unusually hostile toward children despite appearing physically young. Zazie treats the suffering around Keybas as part of an assignment and shows little concern for the lives endangered by the sandworm attacks.

The manga version is more detached and inquisitive. Rather than sharing a straightforward human allegiance, Zazie observes the conflict between humans and Plants while considering which species offers the best possibility for coexistence.

Stampede retains this broader perspective. Zazie speaks from the viewpoint of the Worms native to No Man's Land and treats the struggle between humanity and Plants as a question affecting the planet's original inhabitants.

In the 1998 anime, Zazie uses a high-frequency device to control giant sandworms. The signal allows coordinated attacks that initially make the creatures' behavior appear inexplicable. Vash eventually identifies and destroys the device.

The manga's Zazie is not a single human being. Zazie is the collective intelligence of the planet's indigenous insect life and can occupy human bodies as hosts, allowing the consciousness to continue after an individual body is destroyed.

Trigun Stampede similarly establishes Zazie as the humanoid representative of the Worms' collective intelligence. Zazie can communicate with the native creatures and share sensory information through their network.

The 1998 anime introduces Zazie during the Gung-Ho Guns' campaign against Vash the Stampede. Vash's group reaches Keybas and encounters children whose parents mysteriously abandoned their communities while giant sandworms begin attacking the area.

Zazie has been hiding among the children under the identity Bete and is responsible for controlling the sandworms. After Vash destroys the control device, Zazie reveals allegiance to the Gung-Ho Guns and holds Vash and his companions at gunpoint. Wolfwood shoots Zazie before Vash can resolve the confrontation nonlethally.

The manga gives Zazie a much larger role in the conflict involving Millions Knives. The insect collective initially aligns itself with Knives while evaluating whether humans or Plants are better candidates for coexistence, but its allegiance is ultimately more complicated than simple loyalty to him.

Vash the Stampede becomes a subject of Zazie's observation as well as an enemy in the Gung-Ho Guns conflict. The different continuities use their confrontation to explore whether coexistence is possible on No Man's Land.

Nicholas D. Wolfwood confronts Zazie in the 1998 anime. Wolfwood kills Zazie when the Gung-Ho Gun threatens Vash and the others, causing a major argument between Wolfwood and Vash over whether lethal force was necessary.

Millions Knives attracts Zazie's attention because of his plans for the relationship between Plants and humanity. In the manga, Zazie's collective initially sides with Knives while deciding which species it can coexist with.

Legato Bluesummers operates alongside Zazie within Knives's forces. In the manga, Legato destroys one of Zazie's host bodies after Zazie attempts to use a worm against Knives.

Hoppered the Gauntlet destroys one of Zazie's manga host bodies after discovering it spying on him.
