Personality
Personality
Jin is easygoing, playful, confident, and fond of acting as though serious problems are already under control. He frequently jokes with younger agents, teases colleagues, and uses his Side Effect as an explanation for behavior that other people find suspicious.
His relaxed presentation conceals an enormous sense of responsibility. Seeing possible futures means Jin often knows that some bad outcomes cannot be prevented without accepting another loss elsewhere. He rarely explains everything he sees, partly because revealing information can itself change people's decisions and alter the future.
Jin is highly persuasive and politically astute. He understands Border's internal factions, knows which individuals can be pushed or bargained with, and often arranges situations in which other people willingly make the decision he needs rather than being directly ordered.
He has particular sympathy for young agents forced into dangerous circumstances. His support for Yuuma and Osamu is not simply rebellion against headquarters; Jin repeatedly identifies individuals whose future actions can improve Border's chances of surviving much larger threats.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Jin's Side Effect is Foresight, one of the most influential abilities in Border. After seeing a person directly, he can perceive multiple possible future events involving them. The farther into the future he looks, the less certain the outcomes become, and his own interventions can change which possibility occurs.
The ability does not provide omniscience. Jin must interpret what he sees, cannot necessarily prevent every unfavorable branch, and may deliberately accept a smaller loss when alternatives lead to catastrophe. Much of his strategic value comes from understanding probabilities rather than merely knowing a single predetermined future.
As an Attacker, Jin is one of Border's strongest sword fighters. He formerly fought with Kogetsu before helping inspire the development of Scorpion, a Trion blade capable of changing its shape and emerging from different parts of the user's Trion body.
Jin's original Scorpion style emphasizes flexibility, unexpected attack angles, and the ability to respond to close-range changes faster than rigid weapons permit. His combat intelligence makes him dangerous even without Foresight.
Fujin, his former Black Trigger, creates remote slashes that can be placed along visible surfaces and released across significant distances. Jin combines the Trigger with Foresight so effectively that opponents may be attacked through routes he prepared before they recognize the danger.
Story Role
Story Role
Jin is introduced as a senior Border agent who already knows far more about Yuuma than Osamu expects. His connection to Tamakoma places him among the members of Border willing to distinguish friendly Neighbors from hostile ones.
When Border headquarters attempts to acquire Yuuma's Black Trigger, Jin becomes the central defender of Tamakoma's position. He faces elite squads from headquarters while using Foresight and Fujin to control the battle without unnecessary casualties.
Jin ultimately returns Fujin to Border rather than retain his S-Rank privilege, using the Black Trigger as part of the compromise that protects Yuuma. Because Fujin has multiple compatible users, placing it under headquarters' control also strengthens Border as a whole.
Before the Large-Scale Invasion, Jin's Side Effect warns him that a major attack is approaching. His inability to know every detail forces Border to prepare around probabilities rather than an exact script, and Jin spends much of the invasion manipulating dangerous enemy combatants away from the routes most likely to produce catastrophic losses.
His strategic role continues after the invasion. Jin acts as an intermediary between Tamakoma and headquarters, evaluates future threats, and helps manage situations involving Hyuse where immediate hostility would eliminate information or opportunities Border may later need.
Events surrounding the Away Mission Selection Test increasingly demonstrate the limits of relying on Jin. Border's future operations must function even in circumstances where his Side Effect cannot provide a simple answer, reinforcing that Foresight is a strategic resource rather than an infallible solution.
Relationships
Relationships
Souichi Mogami is Jin's former mentor. [Souichi Mogami sacrifices his life to become Fujin, leaving Jin with both the Black Trigger and a personal understanding of the cost behind Border's most powerful weapons.](#spoiler)
Yuuma Kuga becomes one of the people Jin protects most directly when headquarters targets his Black Trigger. Jin recognizes that Yuuma Kuga's future value to Border outweighs the immediate benefit of treating him as an enemy.
Osamu Mikumo has been helped by Jin since before the main story. Jin sees possibilities in Osamu Mikumo's decisions that are not obvious from his weak combat statistics and repeatedly provides just enough guidance for Osamu to make his own choice.
Masamune Kido leads the headquarters faction and frequently disagrees with Tamakoma's tolerance toward Neighbors. Jin nevertheless understands Masamune Kido well enough to negotiate compromises rather than treating him as a simple enemy.
Takumi Rindou is Jin's branch chief and one of the senior Border members most aligned with his approach toward friendly Neighbor nations.
Hyuse becomes Jin's direct opponent during the Aftokrator invasion. Jin deliberately keeps Hyuse occupied rather than simply pursuing the most obvious immediate outcome, and later helps manage his presence at Tamakoma.
Arashiyama Jun, Kazama Souya, Tachikawa Kei, and other elite Border agents are longtime colleagues and rivals who understand how dangerous Jin becomes when his exceptional Attacker skill is combined with Foresight.
