Personality
Personality
Shiraishi is carefree, opportunistic, sociable, and almost compulsively drawn toward pleasures that have nothing to do with the gold hunt. Gambling, drinking, food, and attractive women repeatedly distract him, and he prefers schemes that minimize effort or physical danger. His unserious manner frequently irritates Sugimoto and Asirpa, especially when they are concentrating on survival or tracking another prisoner.
His cowardice is more complicated than simple weakness. Shiraishi recognizes accurately that he cannot win direct fights against men such as Hyakunosuke Ogata, Toshizou Hijikata, or Tatsuuma Ushiyama, so he avoids battles that would accomplish nothing except getting him killed. When captured, he rarely panics; imprisonment is an environment in which he understands the rules better than almost anyone.
Shiraishi is also much more loyal than his reputation suggests. He sometimes changes sides, withholds information, or tries to preserve his own options, but repeated danger turns his association with Sugimoto and Asirpa into genuine friendship. Satoru Noda's fanbook commentary characterizes him as Sugimoto's "hidden partner," comparing his slippery position in the group more to Fujiko Mine than to a straightforward sidekick.
His emotional intelligence is particularly useful around guards and captors. Shiraishi understands boredom, complacency, greed, loneliness, and routine and can spend long periods encouraging those weaknesses until a supposedly secure jailer gives him precisely the opening he needs.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Shiraishi's defining talent is escape artistry. He can dislocate joints, compress or contort his body, slip through openings that seem too narrow, and remove himself from ropes, shackles, cells, and other restraints. His reputation comes from repeatedly escaping prisons across Japan, which is why the Abashiri prisoners themselves know him as the Escape King.
He is an expert at improvised lock-picking. Shiraishi conceals small objects in places guards are unlikely to search thoroughly and can adapt mundane items into escape tools. His methods exploit both mechanical weaknesses and human routines rather than depending on one specialized trick.
His flexibility makes him difficult to restrain even after capture. Handcuffs and bindings that would immobilize an ordinary prisoner are temporary obstacles, and he is willing to endure considerable discomfort if it opens an escape route. His repeated imprisonment has also given him practical knowledge of prison layouts, guard behavior, inspections, and security habits.
Shiraishi is a capable infiltrator and scout. He can enter locations that heavily armed companions would draw attention to, gather information through conversation, and move among criminals without immediately provoking confrontation. His willingness to bluff helps compensate for his limited fighting ability.
He can fight when absolutely necessary, but combat is not his specialty. Compared with Sugimoto's strength or Asirpa's hunting skill, Shiraishi's real contribution is mobility: he gets into places, gets out of places, and occasionally makes escape possible for everyone else.
Story Role
Story Role
Shiraishi enters the gold hunt as one of the escaped Abashiri convicts carrying a tattooed section of the coded map. After learning that Sugimoto and Asirpa are searching for the tattooed prisoners, he provides information about the Abashiri escape and the existence of numerous convicts scattered across Hokkaido.
Instead of remaining merely a captured source, he becomes part of their traveling group. His knowledge of the other prisoners is invaluable because he understands the personalities, crimes, and reputations circulating among the escapees. The official anime places him alongside Sugimoto and Asirpa as one of the central members of their faction.
His loyalties become complicated when Hijikata's faction also seeks the tattoo skins. Shiraishi is sufficiently pragmatic to maintain contacts across competing groups, which sometimes makes Sugimoto suspicious of him. Yet the shifting alliances of the gold hunt mean that this apparent unreliability can also give the group information no rigidly loyal participant could obtain.
Shiraishi later joins the expedition connected to Karafuto and becomes important not because he can overpower the soldiers involved, but because he can survive detention, navigate criminal situations, and assist when the group needs unconventional solutions. His comic behavior persists even as the search becomes increasingly lethal.
After the Karafuto expedition, Shiraishi reunites with Sugimoto and Asirpa and resumes the search for the gold. The official Final Season material specifically identifies the three as having restarted their journey together after returning from Karafuto, eventually bringing them into the struggle surrounding Sapporo and its remaining tattooed convicts.
During the final phase of the gold hunt, Shiraishi remains beside Sugimoto and Asirpa as the competing factions converge on the location and meaning of the treasure. After the main conflict ends, he uses part of what he obtains from the treasure to establish himself far from Hokkaido, fulfilling the absurdly grand ambitions that once seemed impossible for a habitual prisoner.
Relationships
Relationships
Saichi Sugimoto begins by viewing Shiraishi partly as a tattooed convict whose skin contains information he needs. Their association develops into a volatile friendship built on repeated escapes, betrayals narrowly avoided, and survival together. The fanbook's description of Shiraishi as Saichi Sugimoto's hidden partner captures how frequently he operates beside Sugimoto without ever becoming a conventional subordinate.
Asirpa regularly mocks Shiraishi's cowardice, appetite, gambling, and bodily mishaps, but she also accepts him as part of the traveling group. Asirpa's directness leaves Shiraishi with little opportunity to pretend he is more dignified than he really is.
Toshizou Hijikata recognizes Shiraishi's value as both an escaped convict and a potential information source. Shiraishi moves between Toshizou Hijikata's interests and Sugimoto's group carefully, knowing that both factions can benefit from his knowledge while either could also decide his tattoo is more useful than he is.
Kiroranke draws Shiraishi into the journey north after the crisis surrounding Abashiri. Shiraishi travels with Kiroranke, Asirpa, and the others through Karafuto even though he does not share all of Kiroranke's political motivations.
Hyakunosuke Ogata is another dangerous companion during the Karafuto journey. Shiraishi understands that Hyakunosuke Ogata is far more dangerous in direct confrontation and generally treats him with the caution appropriate to a skilled sniper whose motives are difficult to read.
Yoshie Shiratori is the real Japanese escape artist who inspired Shiraishi's conception. This is an external real-world reference rather than a relationship within the story; Shiratori became famous for multiple escapes from Japanese prisons, paralleling Shiraishi's fictional reputation.
