Asirpa

アシㇼパ

Story Role

Asirpa encounters Sugimoto after a brown bear attacks him while he is investigating the story of stolen Ainu gold. She saves him and confirms that the treasure is connected to a massacre in which Ainu men were killed. Believing her father to have been among the victims, she agrees to cooperate with Sugimoto.

Their objective requires finding escaped prisoners from Abashiri Prison whose tattooed bodies collectively encode the location of the treasure. Asirpa contributes not only wilderness knowledge but also a moral boundary: she refuses to accept skinning people simply because their tattoos are useful.

The search exposes her to factions with very different intentions for the gold. The 7th Division under Tokushirou Tsurumi seeks money for its own political and military aims, while Hijikata's faction pursues another vision of Hokkaido's future. Asirpa gradually realizes that the treasure is tied to questions about Ainu land and political survival rather than being merely buried wealth.

Her father's history becomes increasingly central. Wilk did far more than participate in an isolated gold dispute, and his past connects Asirpa to people and movements beyond Hokkaido. The journey toward Abashiri therefore becomes simultaneously a treasure hunt and an investigation into what her father intended her to inherit.

After the Abashiri crisis, Asirpa travels north through Karafuto with Kiroranke, Ogata, and Shiraishi. The expedition exposes her to Karafuto Ainu and other northern peoples, broadening her understanding of the ethnic and political world to which her father's life was connected.

Her eventual reunion with Sugimoto restores the central partnership of the series. The official Final Season synopsis confirms that after returning from Karafuto, Asirpa, Sugimoto, and Shiraishi restart their search for the treasure and head toward the final convergence of the competing factions.

The later search establishes that Asirpa possesses knowledge essential to interpreting the tattoo code and her father's intentions. Rather than accepting another person's political program wholesale, she ultimately makes her own decision about what the Ainu gold should mean and how it should be used.

After the climactic struggle for the treasure, Asirpa remains committed to protecting Ainu land and culture. The manga's ending shows her several years older and continuing to work with Sugimoto rather than abandoning the identity and responsibilities she developed through the journey.
