Yoshino Souma

Yoshino is lonely, fatalistic and burdened by her long association with Kariya, yet she retains compassion that many of the other Bounts have abandoned. She rejects his willingness to consume living Humans and attempts to disrupt his plans independently.

Her developing trust in Uryuu gives both characters temporary companionship. Yoshino’s affection remains understated, and the story does not establish a completed romance between them.

Yoshino has the longevity, spiritual awareness and soul-absorption abilities of a Bount. Her Doll, Goethe, is a large humanoid being composed of fire that can fly, launch flames and reconstruct itself after ordinary damage.

Goethe regards Yoshino as a mother and is unusually devoted to her. When the seal governing their connection breaks, Yoshino merges with Goethe, gaining his flames and physical power. The resulting “maternal” spiritual energy later becomes essential to Kariya’s creation of the Bitto; this is not biological reproduction.

Yoshino first encounters Uryuu while attempting to consume a Human soul to strengthen herself against Kariya. She ultimately spares the victim, saves Uryuu from other Bounts and explains their origins and prohibition against feeding on the living.

Kariya breaks the restraint on Goethe and compels Yoshino toward a complete union with her Doll. He mortally wounds the merged pair, and Yoshino dies in Uryuu’s arms. Kariya then uses the released energy of her soul to produce the Bitto that harvest living souls.

Jin Kariya is Yoshino’s former husband and the leader whose nihilistic plan she opposes. He ultimately exploits her death to empower the other Bounts.

Uryuu Ishida becomes Yoshino’s confidant and protector during her rebellion. Goethe is her devoted Doll and treats her as his mother.

Ran'Tao is the Soul Reaper whose spiritual pattern apparently served as the template that gave Yoshino a nearly identical face. They are neither biological relatives nor deliberate clones.
