Unkei

Unkei is hardworking, proud of his craft and highly responsive to emotional motivation. He and Kaikei initially work through the night after the Yorozuya express doubts about their abilities.

Their greatest weakness is how easily Sakata Gintoki manipulates their professional pride. Stories about the fictional carpenter Mokichi inspire them to produce increasingly extravagant renovations.

Unkei and his brother nevertheless care sincerely about craftsmanship and take perceived disrespect toward that ideal personally.

Unkei is an exceptionally fast and capable carpenter. Despite his miniature size, he and Kaikei can reconstruct the damaged Yorozuya building in a single night.

Their skills extend far beyond ordinary repairs. When repeatedly challenged by Gintoki and Kagura, they transform the property into increasingly elaborate structures.

The pair ultimately demonstrate technology and construction ability capable of producing a building that can launch into space.

After Tatsuma Sakamoto damages the Yorozuya building with his spacecraft, he sends Unkei and Kaikei as an apology.

Gintoki, Shimura Shinpachi and Kagura are dissatisfied with minor details of the initial reconstruction. Gintoki invents stories about a master carpenter named Mokichi to manipulate the twins into working harder.

When the carpenters discover that Mokichi was invented, they abandon the job. Gintoki catches them before they leave Earth and convinces them that the ideal represented by Mokichi exists in every carpenter's heart. They return and complete an absurdly elaborate structure that ultimately launches into space, destroying the Yorozuya home again.

Kaikei is Unkei's twin brother and fellow space carpenter.

Tatsuma Sakamoto hires the brothers to repair the damage he caused to the Yorozuya.

Sakata Gintoki, Shimura Shinpachi and Kagura are the clients whose increasingly unreasonable demands drive the brothers' construction work.
