Tokinada Tsunayashiro

綱彌代時灘

Story Role

Tokinada's history is closely tied to several events predating the main Bleach storyline. He attended the Shin'ō Academy in the same general era as Shunsui and Ukitake and later married Kakyō, a talented Shinigami from Rukongai who was close friends with Tōsen.

Tokinada abused Kakyō and eventually killed her after she intervened in a confrontation between him and another Shinigami. His family's influence helped shield him from meaningful punishment. He later personally revealed his responsibility to Tōsen and deliberately tormented him with the knowledge that Soul Society's justice system had protected a noble murderer, becoming one of the central experiences behind Tōsen's disillusionment with Soul Society.

In Can't Fear Your Own World, Tokinada rises to become the temporary head of the Tsunayashiro Clan after arranging the elimination of those ahead of him. He exploits the clan's enormous intelligence network and its records of Soul Society's hidden history to begin a plan involving the structure of the worlds and the position of the Soul King.

Central to that plan is Hikone Ubuginu, an artificial hybrid soul created from Shinigami, Hollow, Quincy, and Fullbringer components. Tokinada raises Hikone with the intention of installing them as a new Soul King, treating the child as both a weapon and a deliberately manufactured ruler. His conspiracy brings him into conflict with Shunsui, Hisagi, the Gotei 13, Arrancar, Quincy, Fullbringers, and other factions that would ordinarily have little reason to cooperate.
