Toda

Toda receives little characterization outside competitive play. His appearance is focused almost entirely on the individual championship, and the series does not establish enough about his life away from karuta to support a detailed personality profile.

His ability to remain competitive through an entire Class B tournament nevertheless places him among the stronger players at that level.

Toda is a Class B player capable of advancing to the final of a national high-school individual tournament. Reaching that stage requires surviving several consecutive matches against other players competing for promotion.

He defeats Taichi by three cards in the final. The result is especially significant because Taichi has been working intensely toward Class A and enters the match with promotion within reach.

Toda appears during the individual competition following the National High School Karuta Championship. Taichi progresses through the Class B bracket and reaches the final, where Toda becomes the last obstacle between him and the division championship.

Toda wins by three cards. For Taichi, the defeat is another frustrating setback in a long attempt to reach Class A despite extensive practice and strong tournament performances.

Toda does not subsequently develop into one of the series' recurring rivals.

Taichi Mashima is Toda's opponent in the Class B final of the National High School Individual Championship. Toda defeats Taichi Mashima by three cards, denying him the tournament victory.
