Personality
Personality
Naitou is physically confident and aggressive, relying heavily on the advantages created by his large frame. His imposing appearance and direct approach fit Miuradai's attempt to overpower Shohoku rather than engage its players in a refined technical contest.
His confidence is justified to a point. Naitou's rugby background gives him unusual strength and acceleration for a player of his size, and opponents initially struggle to deal with him.
He is nevertheless inexperienced in basketball. Once his habits are understood, his dependence on athleticism becomes exploitable, showing the difference between possessing exceptional physical tools and understanding the sport at a high level.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Naitou's 196 cm frame and rugby-developed physique give him outstanding strength. He can move with surprising speed for his size and is dangerous when allowed to attack directly toward the basket.
His power also makes him difficult to stop through ordinary physical contact. Miuradai uses him as an unexpected weapon against Shohoku, counting on his unfamiliarity to prevent the opposition from preparing for him.
His principal weakness is basketball experience. Kaede Rukawa recognizes that Naitou tends to look down while dribbling, reducing his awareness of defenders and passing options. Once Shohoku exploits this limitation, his effectiveness declines sharply.
Story Role
Story Role
Naitou appears in the anime's expanded version of Shohoku's prefectural tournament game against Miuradai. His inclusion strengthens a matchup that is considerably shorter and less complicated in the original manga.
Miuradai introduces him as an unexpected physical threat. His combination of size, speed and rugby strength initially catches Shohoku off guard and gives the impression that the supposedly ordinary opponent possesses a dangerous hidden player.
Rukawa eventually identifies the technical weakness produced by Naitou's lack of basketball experience. Once Shohoku attacks that weakness, Naitou can no longer rely on raw physical superiority to control the matchup.
His storyline therefore provides an early contrast with Sakuragi: both possess unusual physical talent and little basketball experience, but Sakuragi's rapid acquisition of fundamentals becomes increasingly important to his development.
