Personality
Personality
Teruko is emotionally volatile and highly conscious of her repeated failures in romance. Her desire for money is partly tied to the hope that financial security might improve a life she regards with considerable dissatisfaction.
Her threatening profession contrasts with a vulnerable and insecure personality. Teruko can shift quickly from aggression to embarrassment, particularly when confronted with romantic attention or situations outside the controlled ritual setting in which she normally works.
Later material gives greater context to this instability. Repeated romantic despair drove Teruko toward multiple suicide attempts before she awakened fully as a shaman, leaving her with a deeply unhealthy relationship with both love and death.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Teruko practices Ushi no Koku Mairi, a traditional Japanese curse ritual. She places part of a target—such as a strand of hair—inside a straw effigy and drives a nail into the doll with a wooden hammer.
The technique is intended to transfer harm to the person represented by the effigy. Its crucial weakness is secrecy: if another person observes Teruko performing the ritual, the curse fails.
Her Guardian Ghost is The Loafers, the spirit of a high-school girl. Teruko initially believes her curses kill their victims, but later material reveals that The Loafers dislikes violence and has actually been causing targets to lose consciousness rather than carrying out Teruko's murderous intentions.
After abandoning her old approach to curses, Teruko transforms the same spiritual principle into something positive, using The Loafers' affection rather than malice. She later gains the ability to perform New Trance with the Archangel Gabriel.
Story Role
Story Role
Teruko is hired together with Hans by Mansumi, who offers enormous financial compensation in exchange for protection during his military assault on the island hosting the Shaman Fight. She accompanies him as the human forces confront the shamans gathered there.
After Hans attacks Hao with the Fallen Angel Azazel, Teruko attempts to use her own specialty against the overwhelmingly powerful shaman. Hao reverses her curse, causing its effects to rebound upon her instead.
Teruko is subsequently restored along with Hans. The ordeal unexpectedly brings the two hired specialists together romantically, and Hans proposes to her. Later stories reveal that they marry, after which Teruko becomes Teruko Reiheit and becomes involved with the X-Laws' humanitarian activities and the search for Marco.
Relationships
Relationships
Hans Reiheit works alongside Teruko as one of Mansumi's hired shamanic specialists. After their confrontation with Hao and subsequent revival, their relationship becomes romantic and they marry.
Mansumi Oyamada hires Teruko as a bodyguard and curse specialist during his intervention in the Shaman Fight.
Hao Asakura becomes the target of Teruko's curse. He effortlessly reverses the technique onto her, demonstrating the enormous difference between their spiritual abilities.
The Loafers is Teruko's Guardian Ghost. The spirit is a high-school girl accidentally killed during one of Teruko's suicide attempts, yet she bears Teruko no hatred and instead remains with her out of concern.
Marco Lasso later becomes connected to Teruko through her involvement with the X-Laws and their search for their missing former leader.
