Tatsumasa Oda

Oda is serious, proud and intensely committed to basketball. He has little patience for Sakuragi's early attitude toward the sport because he remembers him primarily as a fighter who showed no interest in basketball during junior high school.

His pride can make him stubborn. When injured, he is reluctant to accept the limitations imposed by his body and continues thinking about his team's needs even when playing may worsen his condition.

Oda's hostility toward Sakuragi is not simply romantic jealousy. Basketball matters deeply to him, so seeing someone he regards as unserious suddenly enter the sport feels insulting. His opinion begins to change as Sakuragi demonstrates that his commitment is becoming real.

Oda plays center for Takezono despite being a first-year student. At 185 cm and 76 kg, he combines useful size for his age with substantially more organized basketball experience than Sakuragi possesses when they first meet.

He is a committed scorer and interior player who has trained seriously since junior high. His understanding of basketball fundamentals gives him a clear technical advantage over Sakuragi during the latter's earliest stage of development.

An ankle injury becomes a significant limitation during Takezono's tournament run. Oda's determination pushes him to continue competing despite the pain, demonstrating both his toughness and his tendency to disregard his own physical limits.

Oda's importance begins before his physical introduction. Yoko's statement that she likes Oda because he plays basketball is the reason Sakuragi initially declares that he hates the sport.

The first theatrical film develops this background into a direct rivalry. When Oda discovers that Sakuragi has joined Shohoku's basketball team, he is angered by what he assumes is another shallow attempt to impress a girl. Shohoku's practice game against Takezono gives the two an opportunity to confront that resentment on court.

Later anime material revisits Oda as Takezono attempts to advance through the Kanagawa tournament. His injured ankle threatens his ability to continue playing, while Sakuragi's own growing dedication to basketball changes the nature of their relationship.

Yoko Shimamura is Oda's girlfriend and cares deeply about his health. Her earlier rejection of Sakuragi because of her feelings for Oda indirectly triggers Sakuragi's initial hatred of basketball.

Hanamichi Sakuragi attended the same junior high school as Oda and initially regards him as a romantic rival. Oda, in turn, questions Sakuragi's seriousness as a basketball player before gradually recognizing his commitment.

Kaede Rukawa, Takenori Akagi and the rest of Shohoku face Oda as members of the opposing team during the Takezono storyline.
