Tatsuhiko Aota

Aota is loud, stubborn and intensely proud of judo. His determination to recruit Sakuragi becomes comically obsessive, and he is willing to exploit Sakuragi's infatuation with Haruko by offering childhood photographs of her as an incentive.

His rivalry with Akagi is similarly exaggerated but ultimately affectionate. Aota takes pleasure in competing with him and mocking basketball, yet his behavior when Akagi struggles shows that the rivalry rests on a genuine friendship rather than hostility.

Aota also recognizes athletic ability quickly. His pursuit of Sakuragi is not merely an attempt to annoy Akagi; he sincerely believes Sakuragi's balance, strength and fighting instincts could make him an exceptional judoka.

Aota is an accomplished competitive judoka and captain of Shohoku's judo club. His skill is substantial enough for him to qualify for the national championships, establishing him as one of Shohoku High's most successful individual athletes.

He possesses considerable physical strength and grappling ability. Even Sakuragi, who routinely overwhelms ordinary delinquents in fights, cannot simply dismiss Aota as physically harmless.

Aota's expertise lies specifically in judo rather than unrestricted street fighting. His training gives him control over throws, balance and leverage, and his national qualification confirms that his boasts about his sport are backed by real competitive ability.

Aota is introduced when he decides Sakuragi belongs in the judo club rather than the basketball team. Knowing Sakuragi's feelings for Haruko, he produces photographs of her as a child and offers them as bait for joining.

The recruitment attempt forces Sakuragi to articulate his attachment to basketball. Despite his obsession with Haruko and temptation by the photographs, he ultimately rejects Aota because he has begun to identify himself genuinely as a basketball player.

Aota continues appearing as a familiar Shohoku student and friendly rival to Akagi. His own success in judo provides a parallel to the basketball team's attempt to reach the national stage.

During Shohoku's decisive game against Ryonan, Aota supports Akagi when the center is struggling. The moment reveals that years of arguments about their respective sports have never erased his loyalty to his childhood friend.

Takenori Akagi is Aota's childhood friend and longtime rival. Their competition over judo and basketball continues into high school, but Aota genuinely wants Akagi to succeed.

Haruko Akagi has known Aota since childhood. Her old photographs become Aota's preferred bargaining tool when he attempts to recruit Sakuragi.

Hanamichi Sakuragi is Aota's major recruitment target. Aota considers his physical abilities ideal for judo, while Sakuragi repeatedly refuses to abandon basketball.

Aota's relationship with the Akagi siblings makes him one of the few supporting characters who can tease Takenori Akagi about his childhood while still being taken seriously as an athlete.
