Personality
Personality
Sui is narcissistic and especially protective of his face. Even in the middle of a serious confrontation, he asks Sougo Okita not to strike him there, demonstrating that concern for his appearance can outweigh practical considerations.
He is also less steadfast than the image of the Yagyuu Four Devas suggests. When his position deteriorates during the plate battle, self-preservation becomes more important to him than maintaining the dignity expected of an elite Yagyuu retainer.
His behavior earns little sympathy from Ayumu Toujou, whose devotion to the Yagyuu household is considerably more serious.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Sui belongs to the Yagyuu Four Devas, a group consisting of highly skilled students entrusted with protecting the main family. Membership alone establishes him as a trained martial artist rather than an ordinary household servant.
He participates in the plate battle against the Yorozuya and Shinsengumi and directly faces Sougo. The encounter, however, gives him little opportunity to demonstrate superiority: Sougo is one of the Shinsengumi's finest swordsmen and places Sui under immediate pressure.
Sui's combat ability is therefore respectable within the Yagyuu school, but the series does not establish named techniques or distinctive powers unique to him.
Story Role
Story Role
Sui appears during the Yagyuu conflict after Kyuubei Yagyuu brings Otae into the Yagyuu household. When the Yorozuya and Shinsengumi arrive to contest the arrangement, the dispute is settled through a team battle in which each participant must protect a plate.
Sui is matched against Sougo. His insistence that his face remain unharmed undermines the imposing reputation attached to the Four Devas and turns their confrontation into another example of the Yagyuu retainers' eccentricities.
After attempting to escape the fighting, Sui is punished by Toujou, who refuses to tolerate his cowardice and destroys his plate himself.
Much later, Sui appears again alongside members of the Yagyuu family during the defense of Edo against the Liberation Army.
Relationships
Relationships
Ayumu Toujou leads the Yagyuu Four Devas and expects Sui to uphold the responsibilities attached to that position. Toujou punishes Sui himself after Sui attempts to flee the plate battle.
Itsuki Kitaooji and Tsukamu Nishino serve alongside Sui as fellow members of the Yagyuu Four Devas.
Kyuubei Yagyuu belongs to the household Sui and the other Four Devas are charged with protecting.
Sougo Okita is Sui's principal opponent during the Yagyuu plate battle and quickly places the vain retainer on the defensive.
