Shuuji Yusa

Shuuji is quiet, composed and difficult to read. He does not need elaborate displays of confidence because his ability is evident once a match begins. His understated personality can make his competitive intentions seem almost detached compared with more openly emotional players.

He takes badminton seriously and possesses the mentality necessary to compete against older opponents without being intimidated by their experience. Rather than being defined by trash talk or hostility, his rivalry with Taiki develops primarily through what happens on the court.

Later material gives greater context to his reserved behavior. His exceptional improvement created distance between him and players his own age, leaving badminton both the source of his confidence and something that could isolate him socially.

Shuuji is a badminton prodigy whose technical ability develops unusually quickly. Even as a first-year student, he ranks among Sajikawa's strongest players and can defeat experienced upperclassmen.

His play is polished enough that established competitors treat him as a serious threat regardless of age. His arrival changes the prefectural hierarchy that Taiki had been preparing for, showing that progression in competitive sport is not orderly and that younger players can suddenly surpass expectations.

Shuuji continues developing into a national-level opponent and remains one of the benchmarks Taiki must overcome as both advance through high school.

Shuuji enters the story during Taiki's first prefectural qualifiers. Taiki is focused heavily on Haryuu and Hyoudou, only to encounter a younger Sajikawa player whose ability immediately alters his plans.

Shuuji defeats Taiki in the prefectural qualifiers, ending Taiki's first attempt to qualify for nationals in singles. He subsequently becomes a recurring rival whose presence motivates Taiki to improve rather than treating the defeat as a one-time setback.

His younger brother Haruto later enrolls at Eimei specifically while trying to develop outside Shuuji's shadow. The brothers' relationship adds another dimension to Shuuji's role, showing the pressure his talent creates even within his own family. Later chapters reveal that Shuuji himself regards Haruto as an important rival and companion in his development rather than merely an inferior younger brother.

Taiki Inomata is Shuuji's recurring badminton rival. Shuuji ends Taiki's first high-school singles run toward nationals, making defeating him one of Taiki's long-term competitive goals.

Haruto Yusa is Shuuji's younger brother and fellow badminton player. Haruto struggles with constantly being compared to him, while later material reveals that Shuuji values Haruto as a rival who has helped him grow.

Shouta Hyoudou is an older Sajikawa player whose level provides an early benchmark for Shuuji's extraordinary ability.

Kengo Haryuu competes against Shuuji within the same prefectural badminton circuit.
