Shouta Hyoudou

Hyoudou is confident and competitive but not needlessly antagonistic toward opponents. His status as a champion gives him little reason to posture, and he can assess other players according to their actual ability.

He is also willing to advise younger athletes. Rather than protecting his knowledge from potential future rivals, Hyoudou can explain tactical shortcomings and push players to understand what separates competent badminton from higher-level competition.

His directness is particularly useful to Taiki. Hyoudou does not simply tell him to train harder; he draws attention to how opponents construct rallies and control the flow of a match.

Hyoudou is an elite badminton player who wins the boys' Inter-High singles championship during his third year. His level is established before Taiki ever faces the strongest national field: even Haryuu has not defeated him in an official match.

His greatest demonstrated strength is not merely athleticism but match control. Hyoudou understands pacing, positioning and how players create favorable patterns rather than responding point by point.

After leaving high school, he continues playing badminton in college, retaining enough competitive knowledge to train Taiki and Haruto before their prefectural qualifiers.

Hyoudou first appears as the formidable Sajikawa upperclassman standing at the top of the prefecture's badminton hierarchy. Haryuu's difficulty against him establishes how far Taiki remains from the strongest high-school players.

Hyoudou goes on to win the Inter-High singles championship. After graduation, he remains connected to badminton rather than disappearing from the competitive side of the story.

When Taiki and Haruto prepare for later prefectural qualifiers, Hyoudou trains them and gives Taiki specific tactical advice for facing Haryuu. His transition from obstacle to adviser reflects Taiki's movement into a higher competitive tier.

Kengo Haryuu is one of Hyoudou's established rivals. Haryuu repeatedly measures himself against him but struggles to defeat him in official play.

Taiki Inomata initially knows Hyoudou as one of the strongest players he could potentially face. Hyoudou later trains Taiki and helps him understand how to approach his match against Haryuu.

Akari Hyoudou is Shouta's younger sister.

Shuuji Yusa plays for Sajikawa and develops into another elite player associated with Hyoudou's former team.

Haruto Yusa knows Hyoudou through badminton and later trains under him alongside Taiki.
