Shirogane

Shirogane is proud, gluttonous, irritable, cunning, and accustomed to being treated as the unquestioned superior of other ayakashi. He initially regards humans primarily according to their usefulness or magical value, and Suzu is attractive to him because consuming her haku would make him stronger.

His pride is particularly vulnerable after most of his power is sealed. Shirogane remembers himself as a gigantic king feared by ayakashi, yet spends much of the series trapped in the body of an overweight house cat. Being picked up, cuddled, photographed, or treated as an ordinary pet causes him considerable humiliation.

He is nevertheless far more responsible toward ayakashi than his selfish introduction suggests. Shirogane understands the supernatural world's customs and threats better than almost anyone around Matsuri and Suzu, and his position as king carries genuine obligations toward weaker spirits.

His relationship with humans changes slowly. He never loses his sharp tongue or opportunism, but repeated cooperation with Matsuri and Suzu produces a loyalty he is reluctant to acknowledge openly. He may complain about saving them while already taking action to do so.

At full strength, Shirogane is one of the most powerful ayakashi in the series. His true form is a gigantic white feline whose size and supernatural energy dwarf ordinary spirits. His status as King of Ayakashi reflects actual power rather than ceremonial rank.

He possesses enormous haku, allowing him to exert supernatural pressure, use powerful ayakashi techniques, and dominate weaker spirits. He can manipulate his form, reduce himself into the appearance of a smaller cat, and use transformation magic on other beings.

The most consequential technique he demonstrates early is the Gender Swap Technique, used against Matsuri. The curse rewrites Matsuri's physical sex and cannot simply be dispelled through ordinary exorcist methods, making restoration dependent on recovering Shirogane's sealed power or finding another supernatural solution.

Shirogane also has considerable knowledge of ayakashi history, spiritual phenomena, possessions, and obscure supernatural rules. Even while weakened, that information makes him valuable because Matsuri's exorcist training is primarily concerned with destroying or sealing threats rather than understanding every kind of ayakashi.

As pieces of his sealed power return, Shirogane regains increasingly large portions of his original strength and can once again assume more imposing forms. His role also changes as Suzu's developing power challenges the idea that he alone can define leadership among ayakashi.

Shirogane enters the story after disguising himself as a harmless cat around Suzu. She immediately treats him affectionately, unaware that the animal she has befriended is the King of Ayakashi assessing whether to eat her.

Matsuri recognizes the danger and confronts him. Unable to destroy Shirogane outright, Matsuri uses a sealing scroll to imprison most of his supernatural power. Shirogane retaliates at the last moment by using his Gender Swap Technique on Matsuri, changing his body from male to female in the hope of preventing Matsuri and Suzu from becoming romantically involved.

Because the scroll containing Shirogane's power is subsequently lost from his direct control, he cannot immediately undo the transformation even if he wanted to. He remains near Matsuri and Suzu while searching for opportunities to reclaim his sealed haku, creating the three-way relationship from which the series takes its title.

Shirogane's role gradually expands beyond antagonist. He understands dangerous ayakashi that neither Matsuri nor Suzu recognizes, joins them against threats that would destabilize the supernatural world, and sometimes protects Suzu despite still claiming an interest in consuming her power.

His authority also becomes important when other ayakashi challenge the existing order. Spirits such as Tadare see Suzu as a shortcut to replacing Shirogane as king, while older acquaintances such as Garaku Utagawa continue to recognize Shirogane's historical position.

Suzu's eventual transformation into the new King of Ayakashi forces Shirogane to confront the possibility that his position is no longer uniquely his. Rather than remaining a simple rivalry for authority, the change reflects the growing possibility of a supernatural order based on Suzu's ability to connect humans and ayakashi.

Suzu Kanade begins as Shirogane's intended meal. Her enormous haku promises enough power to make even the King of Ayakashi stronger, so he deliberately approaches her in a harmless form. Suzu's immediate affection complicates that relationship because she treats him as a friend before knowing what he is.

Over time, Suzu Kanade becomes someone Shirogane protects as often as he threatens. Her eventual recognition as a new King of Ayakashi fundamentally changes their hierarchy, turning the former prey into a supernatural leader whose authority Shirogane must acknowledge.

Matsuri Kazamaki is Shirogane's principal rival. Matsuri seals away most of Shirogane's power, while Shirogane retaliates by transforming Matsuri's body. Their constant hostility gradually develops into an effective combat partnership because both have strong reasons to prevent Suzu from being harmed by other enemies.

Garaku Utagawa is an ancient ayakashi who reveres Shirogane and regards himself as one of his followers. Garaku Utagawa's obsession with cats makes his affection especially intense, much to Shirogane's irritation.

Tadare is an old ayakashi whom Shirogane releases from a centuries-long seal in the hope of recruiting him. [Tadare instead decides that eating Suzu could make him strong enough to replace Shirogane as King of Ayakashi, turning a potential subordinate into an immediate enemy.](#spoiler)

Soga Ninokuru regards Shirogane as a dangerous ayakashi that should be exorcised. Soga Ninokuru's initial arrival at Hokusai High is driven partly by the intention to kill him, though Matsuri prevents the execution.

Seigen Kazamaki is head of the Kazamaki exorcist ninja clan and understands the danger represented by Shirogane better than ordinary humans. His knowledge of the King of Ayakashi influences Matsuri's response to Suzu's increasingly dangerous situation.

Tanumaro belongs to the wider ayakashi community over which Shirogane historically rules. When Suzu later assumes the title of King, Tanumaro's resistance illustrates that Shirogane's old authority cannot simply be transferred without challenging long-established attitudes among ayakashi.
