Shachi

Shachi is initially violent, boastful and obsessed with looking intimidating. He presents himself as a dominant figure among prisoners, but his ego is remarkably easy to manipulate. Criticism of his shoulder pads, sleeves or other supposedly threatening fashion choices can reduce his confidence immediately.

He is also surprisingly impressionable. Kotarou Katsura and later Sakata Gintoki both find ways to turn the self-proclaimed prison king into a subordinate.

Manga reveals a more vulnerable side. Shachi takes criticism of his work personally, worries intensely about whether readers will accept it and gradually channels energy once devoted to crime into becoming an artist.

Shachi is physically strong and experienced in prison violence, enough to maintain a fearsome reputation among ordinary inmates.

His most distinctive later skill is drawing manga. Although his artistic instincts are eccentric, he becomes serious about creating publishable work and develops enough ability to pursue serialization.

Gintoki acts as an informal collaborator and adviser, though their partnership frequently produces absurd concepts rather than conventional professional guidance.

Shachi first appears when Katsura is imprisoned. He attempts to establish dominance over the newcomer but is manipulated into following him instead, undermining his own "King of Criminals" persona.

He becomes more prominent when Gintoki is incarcerated. Shachi is initially encouraged to harass him, but Gintoki discovers the prisoner's manga manuscript and becomes involved in developing it.

Later appearances focus increasingly on Shachi's attempts to become a professional mangaka. He seeks Gintoki's advice about both manga and his feelings for Narutaki, a prison doctor who appreciates his work.

During the Silver Soul conflict, Asaemon frees the prisoners from a burning jail. Shachi later encounters the disguised Gintoki and Shinpachi while obsessively searching for manga screen tones, demonstrating that his identity as a creator has largely replaced his former criminal bravado.

Sakata Gintoki becomes Shachi's "aniki" and manga collaborator. Shachi respects him greatly even though Gintoki repeatedly forgets or mangles his name.

Kotarou Katsura initially becomes Shachi's target in prison but quickly manipulates him into acting as a follower.

Narutaki is the prison doctor for whom Shachi develops romantic feelings after she responds positively to his manga.

Asaemon Ikeda helps free Shachi and the other prisoners when the jail is endangered during the Silver Soul conflict.

Shimura Shinpachi later reads Shachi's manga and provides criticism when Shachi is struggling without Gintoki.
