Asaemon Ikeda

Asaemon is initially solemn, detached and preoccupied with death. Her profession and personal guilt have taught her to suppress emotion, and she speaks about killing and execution with a matter-of-fact calm that can unsettle others.

Her composure has limits. She considers parts of her skull-shaped headgear strangely intimate and can react violently when they are touched.

Asaemon's strongest attachment is to the Ikeda Clan as the family that took her in. Her willingness to accept disgrace is closely connected to protecting its reputation and the people she regards as family.

Asaemon is an accomplished swordswoman trained specifically as an executioner. Her technique emphasizes an immediate, clean decapitation rather than prolonged combat.

She practices Kimoarai, the signature execution technique associated with holders of the Ikeda Yaemon title. Its purpose is to remove the head so cleanly that the condemned person experiences minimal suffering.

Her precision allows her to cut through substantial objects as well as human targets. Although specialized as an executioner rather than battlefield warrior, she is dangerous in direct combat.

Asaemon approaches Sakata Gintoki while burdened by her history with the Ikeda Clan. Their meeting develops into the Shinigami arc, in which both become entangled in a conspiracy involving former Joui prisoners and the Hitotsubashi faction.

Asaemon had been adopted by the 16th Ikeda Yaemon after her biological father attempted to sacrifice her to save himself. Gintoki, then a prisoner, intervened in the incident and met Asaemon when she was still a child.

Her adoptive brother manipulated her into believing she had killed their father and arranged for her to bear the stigma of betrayal. The truth of the 16th Yaemon's actions and her brother's conspiracy eventually allows Asaemon to confront the guilt that has defined her life.

After the 18th Yaemon's fall, Asaemon eventually inherits the Ikeda leadership again as the 19th Ikeda Yaemon. She later assists during the Silver Soul conflict, including freeing prisoners from the endangered Edo jail.

16th Ikeda Yaemon is Asaemon's adoptive father and the man who brought her into the Ikeda Clan. His compassion toward prisoners and decision to adopt her shape her understanding of what an executioner should be.

18th Ikeda Yaemon is Asaemon's adoptive brother. His jealousy over losing the succession to her leads him to manipulate Asaemon and use her in his conspiracy.

Sakata Gintoki met Asaemon during her childhood and later becomes central to helping her confront her past.

Sougo Okita and Toushirou Hijikata become involved when the Shinsengumi investigate the killings connected to the Ikeda Clan.

Shachi is among the prisoners Asaemon later encounters during the crisis affecting Edo.
