Personality
Personality
Maeno is cheerful, patient and unusually willing to let young players enjoy baseball rather than treating every game as a calculation of results. His preference for giving third-year students opportunities before they graduate contributes to his reputation as a lenient coach.
That gentleness should not be mistaken for indifference. Maeno becomes forceful when adults threaten the opportunities of players who are genuinely working hard. He strongly opposes the idea that students should have their dreams taken away simply because an administrator or coach has decided they are inconvenient.
Maeno also has a good eye for where players belong. He recognizes, for example, that Keiichirou Senda's personality and athleticism make him better suited to shortstop than pitcher.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Maeno has decades of coaching experience and extensive connections within regional high-school baseball. Other coaches know him well, giving Seishuu access to practice games and information that a newer coach might struggle to arrange.
His coaching style emphasizes development and team cohesion. He is willing to work with players Daimon has dismissed and does not judge potential solely through conventional selection tests.
Maeno also demonstrates tactical awareness once games begin. He understands the strengths and limitations of his roster and is willing to rely on Kou, Osamu Akaishi, Yuuhei Azuma and the rest of the team in high-pressure situations.
Story Role
Story Role
Maeno begins as Seishuu's established coach before Daimon's arrival reduces him to supervising the prefab team. The demotion creates an unintended consequence: many of the players who will define Seishuu's future develop together away from the favored varsity.
The prefab-versus-varsity games become tests of Maeno's approach against Daimon's recruitment-driven system. After the prefab squad wins the decisive rematch, Daimon is removed and Maeno returns to his position as Seishuu's head coach.
He then leads the unified team through official tournament competition. Under Maeno, Seishuu eventually defeats Ryuou in the prefectural final and earns its place at Koshien.
Relationships
Relationships
Kou Kitamura develops into Seishuu's ace under Maeno. Maeno gives Kou Kitamura room to develop rather than trying to control every aspect of his unusual path into organized baseball.
Osamu Akaishi becomes one of Maeno's most important leaders on the field, serving as catcher and eventually captain.
Shuugo Daimon represents the opposite coaching philosophy. Where Shuugo Daimon prioritizes recruited talent and immediate results, Maeno places greater value on the players already committed to the school and their opportunity to play.
Keiichirou Senda benefits directly from Maeno's judgment when the coach recognizes that shortstop suits him better than pitching.
Yuuhei Azuma eventually plays under Maeno after beginning his Seishuu career as the star of Daimon's varsity.
Junpei Azuma later assists the Seishuu program and works alongside Maeno in supporting the players.
