Yuuhei Azuma

Yuuhei is serious, aloof and brutally practical. He pays little attention to people he considers irrelevant and sometimes fails to remember their names or faces. Baseball ability earns his attention far more reliably than popularity or social status.

His apparent arrogance is accompanied by unusually clear judgment. Yuuhei does not dismiss Kou because he trains with the prefab squad; he watches his preparation, recognizes his potential and treats him as a player worth remembering.

He also has a dry sense of humor that becomes more visible as he grows comfortable around Seishuu's players. His initially distant manner gradually gives way to genuine loyalty toward the teammates he comes to respect.

Yuuhei is an elite left-handed batter and Seishuu's cleanup hitter. His power makes him the central run-producing threat in the lineup, while his ability at first base gives the team a strong defensive presence on the right side of the infield.

His hitting is advanced enough for Daimon to recruit him specifically as part of a team intended to reach Koshien. Unlike many power hitters, Yuuhei is also observant and analytical, quickly evaluating pitchers and understanding how individual strengths fit into a team's chances of winning.

His baseball judgment extends to Kou. He recognizes that Kou possesses qualities Daimon's evaluation system has missed and eventually regards him as essential to Seishuu's chances of reaching Koshien.

Yuuhei enters as the most imposing member of Daimon's recruited varsity. His commitment to that team is pragmatic: he believes Daimon and the recruited players offer the highest probability of reaching Koshien.

His determination is rooted in guilt over Junpei's ruined baseball career. Junpei had been a promising pitcher until he injured his leg while preventing Yuuhei from falling down a staircase, and Yuuhei carries responsibility for the accident into his own pursuit of Koshien.

The prefab team's strength gradually undermines his confidence in Daimon's system. When Daimon and most of the recruited players leave Seishuu after losing the decisive rematch, Yuuhei stays because Kou gives him a better reason to believe the school can reach Koshien.

He subsequently becomes one of the pillars of Seishuu's unified team. His power hitting contributes to the club's eventual regional championship and qualification for Koshien.

Junpei Azuma is Yuuhei's older brother and the person most closely tied to his determination to reach Koshien. [Yuuhei carries deep guilt because Junpei Azuma's career-ending injury occurred while protecting him from a fall.](#spoiler)

Kou Kitamura earns Yuuhei's respect earlier than most prefab players. [Yuuhei ultimately chooses to remain at Seishuu largely because he believes Kou Kitamura gives the school a genuine path to Koshien.](#spoiler) Their relationship develops into a strong friendship as well as an effective baseball partnership.

Aoba Tsukishima attracts Yuuhei's attention both as a talented pitcher and as a potential romantic interest. [He eventually recognizes the depth of the connection between Aoba Tsukishima and Kou and does not pursue her further.](#spoiler)

Shuugo Daimon recruits Yuuhei to Seishuu. Yuuhei initially trusts Shuugo Daimon's program because it appears to offer the best route to Koshien, but that confidence erodes as the prefab team proves its ability.

Ichiyou Tsukishima becomes increasingly important to the Azuma family through her relationship with Yuuhei's brother. She eventually marries Junpei, becoming Yuuhei's sister-in-law.
