Sensou no Akuma

Sensou no Akuma embodies humanity's fear of war and belongs to the small group of exceptionally powerful devils known as the Four Horsemen. Her history stretches back well before her first direct appearance in the manga and is tied closely to Chainsaw Man, whose unusual ability to erase devils and the concepts represented by their names has affected the very existence of warfare.

Before the Academy Saga, the War Devil fought Chainsaw Man alongside the other Horsemen and weapon-related devils. During their conflict, Chainsaw Man partially consumed her, dramatically weakening both the War Devil herself and humanity's collective memory and fear of war. Chainsaw Man also consumed the Nuclear Weapons Devil, removing nuclear weapons from the world entirely.

By the time she reappears, the War Devil exists in a weakened bird-like form. She encounters Asa Mitaka immediately after the Class President, empowered by the Justice Devil, fatally wounds her. Yoru offers to preserve Asa's life and takes over part of her body, leaving enough of Asa's brain intact because she needs a human identity capable of locating Chainsaw Man at school.

Yoru subsequently adopts the name "Yoru," meaning "night," after Asa asks what she should call her. The name deliberately contrasts with Asa's name, which means "morning." From that point onward, the two share one body while retaining distinct personalities and competing priorities.

Her initial objective is explicit: find Chainsaw Man, defeat him and force him to regurgitate the Nuclear Weapons Devil. Restoring nuclear weapons would increase humanity's fear of warfare and, by extension, restore a significant portion of Yoru's own power.

The arrangement with Asa develops far beyond the simple possession Yoru originally intended. Asa retains control for much of their daily life, while Yoru can take over under many circumstances. Their memories, senses and emotions increasingly overlap, creating a relationship in which neither remains psychologically untouched by the other.

Yoru is proud, aggressive and extremely sensitive to being dismissed. She expects recognition as a powerful devil even when her weakened state makes that claim difficult to support, and challenges to her intelligence or competence provoke disproportionate irritation.

She has a direct, utilitarian understanding of relationships during her early appearances. People and possessions primarily matter according to whether they can become weapons, advance her plans or help her reach Chainsaw Man. She is therefore frequently impatient with Asa's guilt, social anxiety and reluctance to exploit others.

Yoru is not emotionless. Her connection with Asa gradually exposes jealousy, embarrassment, attraction and vulnerability that do not fit the image she wants to maintain. Because the two share a brain, emotions experienced strongly by Asa can influence Yoru even when Yoru insists those feelings do not belong to her.

She also has a distinctly competitive temperament. Defeat affects her personally, particularly when Chainsaw Man is involved. Her hatred is not merely strategic; being weakened and forgotten has injured her pride, and restoring war's importance becomes intertwined with proving that she herself deserves fear and recognition.

Yoru's conception of ownership is central to both her powers and psychology. She decides that something belongs to her according to her own perception rather than an objective legal standard, creating situations where emotional attachment, victory, purchase and conquest can all establish the sense of possession necessary for weapon creation.

As Yoru regains power, her behavior becomes increasingly destructive. The return of widespread fear of war does not merely give her stronger attacks; it reinforces the confidence and appetite for conflict that her weakened state had constrained. Large-scale destruction begins producing visible excitement rather than hesitation.

Her relationship with Asa also grows more complicated as shared emotions blur the boundary between them. Yoru experiences attraction connected to Asa's feelings for Denji and eventually acts upon it herself, even while continuing to treat Chainsaw Man as an enemy she intends to defeat.

Yoru first appears in a small bird-like body resembling an owl or potoo. The form is compact and almost harmless-looking, reflecting how severely Chainsaw Man's earlier actions reduced the War Devil's strength.

After possessing Asa Mitaka, Yoru primarily appears through Asa's body. When Yoru controls it, several visual changes distinguish her from Asa: scars appear across the face, her eyes display the concentric-ring pattern associated with the Horsemen, and her expression becomes noticeably more confident or aggressive.

The scars correspond to the injuries Asa received immediately before Yoru took possession of her body. One runs horizontally across the face while another crosses it vertically, producing a clear visual marker of which personality is active even though most other characters apparently do not react to the distinction in the same way readers can see it.

Yoru retains Asa's black hair, school uniform and general physical proportions because they share the same body. Her posture and facial expressions nevertheless differ considerably. Asa often appears withdrawn and uncomfortable, while Yoru tends to stand upright, stare directly at others and display much greater physical confidence.

Later battles alter their shared body significantly through injuries and weapon manifestations. Yoru's strongest combat phases increasingly combine the ordinary appearance of a teenage student with weapons formed from concepts, devils and national assets on a scale far beyond the body carrying them.

Yoru's core ability is weapon creation. She can transform people and objects she believes belong to her into weapons by naming the target and the resulting weapon. The exact interpretation of ownership is subjective, allowing her perception of possession to determine whether the transformation can occur.

The strength of a created weapon depends heavily on guilt. A weapon made from something that its creator feels terrible about sacrificing becomes far more powerful than one produced from an emotionally insignificant object. This rule makes Asa unusually useful because her strong conscience creates guilt much more readily than Yoru's.

Weapon creation can take countless forms. Ordinary objects become swords, spears or other weapons, while human beings can also be converted when the ownership requirement is satisfied. The resulting weapons often retain some relationship to the material used to create them.

Yoru possesses the heightened physical capabilities expected of a powerful devil, although her weakened state initially limits them considerably. When controlling Asa's body, she demonstrates superior fighting instincts and willingness to use violence compared with Asa herself.

She also shares memories and sensory information with Asa. Yoru can observe many of Asa's experiences even while not controlling the body and can communicate with her internally, appearing as a separate figure visible only within their shared consciousness.

The arrangement has limitations. Strong fear can prevent Yoru from taking control because Asa's fear dominates their shared mental state. Yoru also cannot freely access every memory or emotional response exactly as if they were her own, allowing Asa to retain meaningful psychological independence.

As humanity becomes increasingly afraid of war, Yoru's power rises sharply. Fear is the fundamental source of devil strength, so escalating global conflict and public awareness directly restore capabilities that were diminished when Chainsaw Man weakened the concept of war.

Yoru eventually demonstrates that concepts she regards as her "children" can also fall under her ownership. Because guns and tanks are products of warfare, she considers the Gun Devil and Tank Devil hers and sacrifices them to create extraordinarily powerful gauntlets.

The resulting Gun and Tank Gauntlets restore her missing arms while giving her attacks destructive power far beyond the improvised weapons used earlier in the Academy Saga. The Gun Gauntlet can fire devastating long-range shots capable of heavily damaging Pochita's Chainsaw Man form.

Her ownership logic later expands still further, allowing national possessions and symbols associated with warfare to become usable material when she can establish sufficient conceptual ownership. This elevates her ability from transforming personal possessions into weapons toward manipulating assets with international or symbolic significance.

Weapon Creation is Yoru's fundamental power. She names something she believes she owns followed by the type of weapon she wants, transforming the target accordingly.

Human Weapon Creation applies the same principle to people. If Yoru or Asa genuinely considers another person their possession, that person's body can potentially be transformed into a weapon.

Object Weapon Creation converts ordinary possessions into weapons. The resulting strength varies according to the emotional value of the sacrificed object and the guilt attached to destroying it.

Guilt Amplification is the underlying principle determining weapon quality. Greater guilt over sacrificing the source produces a stronger weapon, making Asa's emotional attachment particularly useful.

Uniform Sword transforms Asa's school uniform into a sword. Because the uniform was purchased for her by her mother, Asa's guilt over destroying it makes the resulting weapon exceptionally powerful despite the mundane material.

Aquarium Spear transforms an aquarium into a spear after Asa convinces herself she has purchased and therefore owns it. The technique demonstrates how subjective interpretations of ownership can satisfy War Devil's power.

Room 606 Sword converts Asa's apartment into a sword after establishing a sufficient sense of ownership over the property.

Right Gun Gauntlet is formed after Yoru claims the Gun Devil as one of war's children and sacrifices it. The weapon replaces an arm and fires enormously destructive projectiles.

Left Tank Gauntlet is produced through the same principle using the Tank Devil. Together, the two gauntlets dramatically increase Yoru's combat strength and restore her ability to fight Chainsaw Man directly.

Gun Goddess is an enormous weaponized manifestation associated with the Statue of Liberty and gun-related power. Yoru uses it to launch a long-range shot of catastrophic scale against Chainsaw Man.

Asa Mitaka shares her body and consciousness with Yoru. [Yoru preserves Asa Mitaka's life after the Class President mortally wounds her, but does so because retaining part of Asa's brain gives her access to human society and the school where Chainsaw Man may be hiding. She initially threatens to take Asa's body completely if Asa refuses to cooperate.](#spoiler)

Nayuta is another incarnation of one of the Horsemen through the Control Devil. [When Yoru kisses Denji in his apartment, Nayuta reacts possessively and uses her Control ability on Asa and Yoru, temporarily making them behave like a dog before altering their memories of the date.](#spoiler)

[Death Devil is another of the Horsemen and is connected to the apocalypse surrounding the Academy Saga. Chainsaw Man functions simultaneously as Yoru's target, rival and measuring point for her lost strength. Her hatred is rooted in the damage Pochita inflicted on war as a concept rather than any grievance against Denji personally. Sensou no Akuma becomes one of the central supernatural forces of the Academy Saga, shifting the manga away from Public Safety's institutional perspective toward a conflict centered on school life, Horsemen and the growing significance of Chainsaw Man as a public symbol.

Her introduction occurs when Asa Mitaka discovers that her teacher and class president are involved in a violent supernatural conflict. After Asa is mortally wounded, Yoru takes part of her body, immediately kills the attackers using weapons created from their own bodies and announces her intention to make Chainsaw Man return nuclear weapons to existence.

The shared-body arrangement gives Yoru an unusual strategic problem. She needs Asa alive because Asa understands human society and can identify possible targets at school, but Asa's morality directly interferes with the most efficient use of War Devil's weapon-making power.

Their early attempts to locate Chainsaw Man lead them toward the school's Devil Hunter Club and eventually Denji. Asa begins dating Denji partly because Yoru wants a human she can transform into a weapon, but genuine emotional attachment develops and complicates the plan.

The aquarium incident demonstrates how Asa can exploit the War Devil's rules creatively. Rather than defeating the Eternity Devil through raw power, Asa purchases the aquarium conceptually and transforms it into a weapon, proving that her interpretation of ownership can make Yoru's ability far more flexible.

The Falling Devil incident expands the scale of the Academy Saga. Asa and Yoru become targets within a larger plan connected to the Horsemen and the Nostradamus prophecy, while Chainsaw Man repeatedly intervenes in ways that complicate Yoru's desire to treat him only as an enemy.

The Chainsaw Man Church later elevates Asa into public prominence. Her ability to create weapons and fight devils becomes associated publicly with the Church, strengthening both Asa's reputation and the broader fear surrounding supernatural violence.

Escalating worldwide conflict eventually restores substantial power to Yoru. Her battles with Chainsaw Man move beyond improvised swords made from personal possessions and into attacks drawing upon gun, tank and national-scale concepts.

The confrontation reaches a new level when Yoru sacrifices the Gun and Tank Devils to form gauntlets and uses the Statue of Liberty as part of an enormous weapon attack. The destruction demonstrates that the weakened devil introduced at the beginning of Part 2 has regained enough fear to threaten Chainsaw Man directly.

Yoru begins with a simple self-conception: she is War, Chainsaw Man humiliated her and the proper response is revenge. Her weakened condition frustrates her because her pride remains far larger than the power she can initially demonstrate.

Asa immediately destabilizes that simplicity. Yoru depends on someone whose strongest characteristic is almost the opposite of hers. Asa feels guilt intensely, worries constantly about other people's opinions and hesitates before causing harm. Those weaknesses from Yoru's perspective become precisely what can create extraordinarily powerful weapons.

The contradiction forces Yoru to rely on qualities she does not personally possess. A weapon created by Yoru with no emotional investment can be weak, while Asa's attachment and guilt can turn mundane objects into devastating weapons. Their shared power therefore rewards emotional connections Yoru initially considers inconvenient.

Living inside Asa also exposes Yoru to emotions that do not fit comfortably into her identity. Attraction toward Denji is the clearest example. Yoru initially explains these feelings as a side effect of sharing Asa's brain, but that distinction becomes harder to maintain as she begins acting on them independently.

Her relationship with Chainsaw Man likewise develops from straightforward revenge toward something more complicated. Yoru wants to restore the fear and concepts he erased, but Chainsaw Man's growing cultural significance also becomes one of the mechanisms through which fear itself is manipulated.

The restoration of Yoru's power produces a darker development rather than simply greater competence. Once capable of causing destruction on an international scale, she exhibits exhilaration at the damage, forcing Asa to confront the fact that her companion is not merely an abrasive supernatural partner but the embodiment of something inherently tied to mass violence.

The Gun and Tank sacrifices also reveal how Yoru understands relationships when her full nature emerges. Even entities she identifies as her children can become weapons if sacrificing them advances war. Her ownership power and worldview increasingly become indistinguishable from one another.

Later confrontations with Denji further complicate the premise that winning establishes ownership. Yoru's competitive psychology becomes relevant to whether she can transform another person, making victory and defeat not just emotional concerns but direct components of her supernatural authority.

Sensou no Akuma is the Japanese designation 戦争の悪魔 (Sensō no Akuma), literally meaning War Devil. 戦争 (sensō) means "war," while 悪魔 (akuma) means "devil" or "demon."

The personal name Yoru is written ヨル in katakana. It corresponds to the Japanese word 夜 (yoru), meaning night.

Yoru chooses this name after beginning to share Asa Mitaka's body. Asa's given name アサ corresponds to 朝 (asa), meaning morning, creating a deliberate morning-and-night pairing between the two personalities occupying the same person.

The contrast reflects their personalities as well. Asa is anxious, socially constrained and governed heavily by conscience, while Yoru is direct, aggressive and willing to turn relationships into instruments of violence.

"War Devil" follows the basic naming principle governing devils throughout Chainsaw Man: each devil corresponds to a concept feared by humans, and its strength depends on the intensity of that fear.

• Yoru's official age, birthday, height and weight have not been published, so none can be responsibly inferred from Asa's body.

• Her name Yoru means "night," while Asa means "morning," creating a deliberate paired naming scheme for the two consciousnesses sharing one body.

• Yoru belongs to the Four Horsemen, placing her in the same broad category of devils as the Control, Famine and Death Devils.

• Her signature power does not depend purely on physical ownership. Perceived ownership is sufficient if Asa or Yoru genuinely believes the target belongs to them.

As of August 2026, Yoru has not yet appeared in the released anime adaptation of Chainsaw Man. The television series covers the early Public Safety material, while Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc continues through the Reze storyline.

The next officially announced animated project is the Assassins Arc, which adapts material still belonging to the Public Safety Saga. Yoru does not enter the manga until Chapter 98, after the conclusion of Part 1, so her Academy Saga material remains well beyond the currently released anime.

Consequently, Yoru currently has no official Japanese or English anime voice actor. Fan casting or assumptions based on promotional manga material are not canon and should not be treated as established profile information.

She does appear extensively in manga-based merchandise, fan events and promotional material associated with Part 2. Her visual pairing with Asa—normal Asa versus scarred, ring-eyed Yoru—has become one of the defining design motifs of the Academy Saga.

A future animated adaptation would necessarily require portraying two distinct personalities through the same physical character, making the transitions between Asa and Yoru central to any audiovisual interpretation. No official casting should be assigned until the production announces one.

Yoru quickly became one of the most discussed new characters introduced after the conclusion of the Public Safety Saga. Her first appearance radically changes the viewpoint of the manga by introducing a character who simultaneously functions as an antagonist, source of supernatural power and constant companion to Asa.

The visual distinction between Asa and Yoru is particularly effective despite their sharing one body. The scars and Horseman eyes immediately communicate control to the reader without requiring repeated exposition, while Yoru's posture and expressions make the personalities recognizable even before dialogue is considered.

Her weapon-making ability has also become one of Part 2's most flexible supernatural systems. Because strength depends on guilt and ownership depends on perception, battles are shaped as much by psychology and relationships as by conventional measurements of supernatural power.

The Asa-Yoru pairing has generated particular interest because their relationship cannot be reduced neatly to possession. Asa is neither simply erased nor completely independent, while Yoru gradually experiences emotions shaped by the human mind she shares. This creates a long-running conflict over where one personality's feelings end and the other's begin.

Yoru's later return to large-scale destructive power substantially changes how earlier scenes read. The comparatively frustrated devil who struggles to turn classmates into useful weapons eventually gains enough fear to transform concepts tied to nations and warfare into attacks capable of severely injuring Chainsaw Man.

Her increasing comfort with destruction also distinguishes her from Asa more sharply as their emotional overlap grows. The two become psychologically closer while their moral differences become more dangerous, leaving the same shared body capable of producing both Asa's guilt and Yoru's exhilaration at the violence that guilt can empower.
