Satoru Sasaoka

Sasaoka is an earnest and generally mild first-year who lacks the overpowering personalities of Shohoku's starters. He accepts a reserve role and continues practicing even when meaningful game time is scarce.

In the anime, he occasionally says the wrong thing around Sakuragi and becomes an easy target for his volatile teammate. These exchanges are comic rather than genuinely hostile.

He remains supportive despite such treatment. Sasaoka cheers for Sakuragi and the other starters rather than resenting the enormous attention given to Shohoku's exceptional newcomers.

Sasaoka plays forward and has enough basketball experience to survive Shohoku's early roster selection, but he is not shown competing at the level required to challenge the team's established rotation.

At 172 cm, he is very small for a high-school forward compared with Shohoku's starting frontcourt. His limited size helps explain why he remains deep on the bench as the team advances against increasingly powerful opposition.

The series does not establish a signature shot, defensive specialty or other individual weapon for Sasaoka. His development takes place mainly through practice.

Sasaoka's most memorable early appearance comes during the Ryonan practice game. When Sakuragi needs a uniform, Shohoku rearranges its available jerseys and Sasaoka ends up wearing a makeshift number 16, leaving him tearfully wondering why he has become the sacrifice.

He remains with Shohoku as a reserve throughout the prefectural tournament and national competition, appearing around the bench and training sessions rather than receiving significant competitive minutes.

In 10 Days After, Sasaoka continues training with the younger Shohoku players, including Toki Kuwata and Kentarou Ishii, as the team begins looking toward its future after the national tournament.

Hanamichi Sakuragi is Sasaoka's fellow first-year teammate and the source of several comic misfortunes, including the jersey reshuffle before the Ryonan practice game.

Kaede Rukawa is another member of Sasaoka's first-year class and immediately occupies a major role in Shohoku's starting lineup.

Toki Kuwata and Kentarou Ishii are fellow first-year reserves who train alongside Sasaoka.

Takenori Akagi is Sasaoka's captain and the demanding senior responsible for setting Shohoku's standards.
